Super high geared 24"/ 19"?

Steve DeKoekkoek has a penguin geared giraffe that is 2:1 with a 20" wheel. It’s fun to ride put I was unable to mount it unassisted.

Could one of those be modified for heavy use?

From what little I know of the design, the cranks are mounted on a long BB axle, 17mm diameter. Thus they are usual square taper cranks which might limit trials-type abuse of the uni. But it looks like a hard landing would not displace the jackshaft assembly, because the cranks and central axle would bear the impact forces.

I thought about using a splined axle, but the issue was (a) aligning the 2 halves required to make a 180mm length, and (b) finding a lightweight crank (current models used square taper carbon or light alloy cranks). A crank setup similar to Profile might be possible, and either Dave S. or I might entertain the issue of making a custom splined guni axle, but I’m telling you it would be $$$.

hmmmmm shame about the cost. I wonder if there is any way I could make one later on in life :sunglasses:
