"Super 8"

Anybody see it yet? I saw it today, and thought it was pretty good, although with all the positive hype from both critics and moviegoers, I was expecting better. Good popcorn movie, and you can see the Spielberg touch, even though he only produced it. Some have called it “a cross between ET and the Goonies”, but I didn’t think it was as good as either of those films, especially ET. …

Turning to the weather…

Looks like I’ll be staying at a Super 8 for a couple of days. I should get some popcorn I guess.

I have never seen Goonies, but think I need to.

Super 8 operated for me on two levels. It was, I thought, very successful at being a movie about 1979 that felt like it was made in 1979. The story was great, the special effects were also fine and somehow didn’t really take away from the 1979 feeling. And it was a movie for all age demographics like E.T. and had the nostalgic innocence of childhood story line. I simply got completely caught up in the story, cared about the characters, and really enjoyed it. The little bit of profanity it included was quite deliberately put in for comic effect, worked, and would be unlikely to offend even the most hardcore old Jewish lady or Archie Bunker type.

However, I agree with Terry in that although in the moment it was a very well done movie, it isn’t particularly memorable. I can’t think of a line it included or a scene that will become iconic from this movie. Anyone who has seen E.T. can think of lots of examples.

So all in all I think it’s worth seeing and if for nothing else I’d like to see it again to catch more of the references to all the horror, disaster, monster and zombie movies of the 1970s I’m sure I missed.

Don’t forget to use Wyndham Rewards

I can’t wait for Open Caption at Long Beach Towne Center or Irvine Spectrum on 17 thru 20 of June.
