Summit Trials Unicycle....

My husband just got the Summit Trials 20’’ uni… and he cant stop staring at the fat tire!! He dont want to ride it because he thinks it is “so pretty brand new!” He’s really excited because this is his first trials uni, and I think he’s gonna do real good on it, because he has a 20’’ 48 spoke torker unistar and he can do 2ft drops on it on concrete easily (and I can do 21" drops too, pretty regularly on my unistar)…However, I do have a question about how much to inflate the “fat” tire (20x2.5) He is 210 lbs, and he has heard to keep it just inflated enough to not touch the rim when doing drops… But I am curious as to what other riders are inflating theres too, so we will have a good round about guess…
Thanks

air pressure is completely personal. weight is a big factor.

The ‘enough air to keep the rim from hitting’ is the perfect amount.

Too hard and it is harder to bounce, too low and you can dent your rim, or have the tire roll off the rim.

If you are going to err, err on the side of too much pressure, then it is only the ride quality that is compromised, not the rim.

thanks, so you think about 30 psi? it is rated for 40?

if he can already hop in place, here’s what I would do…

Start at 20psi.

Hop up and down as high as he can.

If he can feel the faint feeling and dull thud of the rim hitting, put in more pressure. This direct up and down in a ‘controlled manner’ won’t bother the rim, or pinch flat the tires (a symptom of too little pressure)

The lower you can run pressure, the better (in a trials situation)

Maybe his ideal pressure would be 30, but on the other hand, it may be 25. That’s why numbers are hard to judge.

It’s all Trials and Error

i have 18 psi and i am only 130 lb so his should be around 32-35

hope i helped

Nice pun.

I find that I never hit the rim when hopping straight up, but I tend to fold the tire quite easily when side hopping. I’m 140 and run about 25 psi. Even at that, I will fold my tire on occasion.

I was wondering if switching to a rounder tire with thicker sidewalls would help the folding problem. I was looking into getting a 20 inch hookworm. Any opinions?
