Living up in Canada, eh, I’ve been riding on snow and ice for a few months now. Needless to say, I’ve been slipping quite a bit. Has anyone ever studed their tires? Did it work at all? Does anyone have any tips? Is that how you spell ‘studed?’
Many sources of manufactured studded tires and home-made versions can be found using the keywords “studded tire” in the forum search utility. I would suggest using the correct spelling for “studded” though.

“studded”
When I was a boy we used to stud our motocross bicycle tires. We did
this ourselves using small machine screws in the knobby bits of the
tire. It worked pretty well as I recall. This summer when visiting my
LBS I noticed a professionally studded knobby tire for sale on the rack.
It looked quite impressive and expensive. I suspect it would work well
on unicycles too.
Cheers,
Jason
Re: Studed Tires?
You can buy the tyres studded, Nokian have a range of them. Unfortunately I
have never seen one because they are illegal in the UK.

I’ve been thinking about studded tires for a few days now (as I’m back at university in Hamilton, Ontario, with my uni and about a foot of snow).
I emailed Darren (Bedford) last night, asking if there were 24" studded tires and what his opinions were on them. This is what he said:
So it seems the 3.0 Gazz is what I’m going to use for winter riding (which, at $110 CAD, isn’t terribly cheap, but is well worth it, in my opinion).
A friend of a friend uses studded tires on his mountain bike, and said he found them to make a large difference. He paid about $50 CAD a tire (the Nokian studded tires, I would assume are a little bit more than this), which isn’t terrible if you’re just trying it out.
If you’re riding a 26" and can get a studded tire, then I’d say it might be worth looking into. For me, I’m sticking with the downhill.
Later,
Eli.
I headed my way down to canadian tire last winter, and bought a cheap 24" X 2.1" tire, and then i bought several stainless screws, and studded the tire. I mounted it on my MUni, and it works great!
i would suggest it. It’s very easy to do, and it looks really cool!. Well, that’s about it, have fun riding in the snow
