So guys, I’ve heard that DT spokes are where it’s at for strong spokes. Does this still hold true? Are there other good options?
(Muni and trials speaking here)
Also, when one says ‘DT spokes’ do those come with DT nipples too? or is that a whole nother boat?
Nipples may or may not be included depending on who you are buying from and in what quantities. A good retailer will at least include brass nipples. Nicer retailers give you your pick of silver or black brass or the many anodized aluminum colors at no extra charge (I personally steer clear of the aluminums though).
> Make sure you get butted spokes to put the stress where it needs to go.
Double butted spokes are what you want. They reduce stress by
stretching in the thinner middle section without reducing strength at
the ends, where spokes break.
Brass nipples are my choice because aluminum is easy to mangle on a
highly tensioned wheel. And be sure to tension the spokes at the
upper end of the range recommended by the rim manufacturer. High
tension reduces movement so there is less fatigue for longer spoke
life.
