I need help! I would really like to buy the Kris Holm 24-inch MUni, and since I am a poor high school kid I do not have $1,301 (Unicycle.com’s price). The main reason why I want this unicycle is because on my current unicycle my cranks and pedals always break, so I figured instead of getting just the Profile cranks and hub, I would just buy an all around better unicycle. Additionally, my parents would never let me spend that much money on a unicycle, they do not understand. So, basically does anyone know if it is possible to get one cheaper, such as used or something else.
Thank you for your help!

That hub and cranks should fit on the United frames and the Semcycle XL
frames. That alone should knock quite a bit off the price. Also, get a
rim that’s cheaper than a Doublewide. The Mammoth rim isn’t too
unreasonable. Find out what a Sem XL frame with a Profile hub and cranks,
Sun Mammoth rim, and 2.6" Gazzaloddi would cost. It’s still not going to
be cheap, but it’ll sure last.

Re: Strapped for cash!
Anything you get with the Profile setup is going to be somewhat expensive.
But if you think about it, I bet you can find a ton of ways to make $1301.
And if you really want that unicycle you should be able to get it. Be
creative and work hard - it’s great to have a goal like that. Tell your
parents what you’re doing and I bet they can help you think of ways to earn
more. Tell all your relatives etc. Will work for unicycle.
Good luck,
Nathan

$1300 is a lot of money for a unicycle - and that doesn’t even get you a carbon fiber seat to go with it. Yikes. There are not many high school kids who can plunk down that kind of cash for a unicycle, and fewer parents who would understand. I was a couple years out of college before I could get toys like that.
A KH uni is a bit overkill for most needs. One way to cut costs is to skimp on the frame, and ditch the brake. The frame is not the most important part of a muni, and a brake is not necessary. It sounds like unicycle.com may be getting some lower cost frames like the Nimbus which could be an option. Getting an Alex DX32 rim instead of the doublewide or Avro would also save a bit (both money and weight). These options would save several hundred dollars or more from the cost of the KH and still give you bragging rights at a muni weekend or convention. Or you could get a Profile wheel for your existing uni and then upgrade the frame and other parts a piece at a time as you’re able to earn the money for it.
One thing that has amazed me in the North Shore videos is seeing teenagers on $3000+ bikes. Wow. They either have some amazing summer jobs up there, or mom and dad are very generous.
The difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.

Heh, The Beaver wants to know if Eddie Haskel has any hot KH uni’s for sale… “Not today, kid- come back in a week- I might have something by then.”
In an unrelated story, a North Shore cyclist was assaulted by 2 masked assailants today. The victem reports that one of the attackers repeatedly refered to his cohort as “Wally”…

Re: Strapped for cash!
Bert,
Let me first say that the KH muni is awesome and I would probably buy it
if I didn’t have other expenses (such as college) in my immediate future.
That aside, there are many ways to cut the cost. Like others have
suggested, do you really need the KH frame? That’s a huge amount right
there. Also the brake could be dropped. You can get decent pedals that
are cheaper too. And like others have mentioned, the Alex DX32 rim could
be installed.
Another option would be the Hunter muni w/ Profile hub or DM ATU. That
would make a huge price drop. Then after you get out of school and have a
full time job you could upgrade to the KH frame or whatever else comes
out between now and then.
What unicycle do you have? Actually, a suzue hub w/ kooka cranks will
hold up to alot more abuse than you’d expect (ask Carl Hoyer). It’s not
ideal but that would save a lot of cash.

Re: Strapped for cash!
Bert,
Ultimately, all you really need is a good wheelset. If you’re strapped for cash, blow all your
money on a good Profile hub and strong rim (assuming that you’ve got a frame with 40mm bearing
housings). The other components are all good in the end, but a crappy frame/seat with an awesome
wheelset will do a lot for you.
