Stickers

I ordered a new Freestyle bike, today. And I designed this sticker to wrap around the neck of the fork.

The font is named ICBM-SS25, I couldn’t find the license or creator to ask for permission.

Everything else was created by me.

The design is for a 400mm neck (the sticker is supposed to be 360mm high, there’s some room for the seat post clamp slit) with a circumference of 80mm.

I’m also considering dark red.

I’ll have to wait for the parts to arrive before I can actually print it, because I have to check the actual circumference with a caliper. The circumference expectation is based on my 26" Siegmono touring bike (unfit for anything but terrorizing pedestrians).

Thats awesome, I’ve never even thought about creating a sticker for my uni :stuck_out_tongue:

Looks like you’re doing it the hard way. Why not have the seam be in an area with no ink? This way it’ll work even if the diameter is a little off. Otherwise it might not be a good idea to assume the sticker can be printed clearly all the way to the edges.

Well, it has to be seamless if I want text on the back (BTW, the back says “Heavy Metal”).

Cutting it really isn’t a problem. I’ve done this kind of thing before, I now a print shop with a CNC cutter that can cut along arbitrary curves (very sharp corners, close together are a problem), but I just need it to cut in a straight line. No issue at all.

Actually it’s kind of a compromise, because the long neck forks (I’ve had issues with bent seat posts in the past) aren’t available in colour from my dealer.

Well the inconvenience forced me to become creative - this might turn out well.

You were right. I did a test run with the bottom half on my 26er short neck. It looks good there, but I won’t manage to make it come together well enough for text.

I’ll break the design apart into smaller bits.

Can we see what It looks like?

Probably on Saturday.

Finally here they are. This was just a test print so I didn’t put a lot of effort into getting the air bubbles out from under them. I should be getting the revised batch on Wednesday.

Conclusions from this try:

  • The wraparound idea sucks
  • Simply black looks pretty decent, if you know it’s there, so use colour and bring in more contrast
  • Make stuff smaller, so it doesn’t wrap too far and becomes unrecognisable

A while back a uni forum member and facebook friend, Brad Hibbard, had asked me if it was ok if he made some “UniGeezer stickers”. I said sure. He wanted to make them to hand out to people and to put on his helmet. So he had several sheets of them printed, and just sent me a sheet. Thanks Brad, that was really nice of you! The main thing is that it might help inspire people to learn to ride!
