So anyway, I did a quick search and found that there are no threads dedicated to this topic, so I’ve decided to make one.
If you are unsure of what Steampunk is, I’ll give you a quick definition:
Dictionary.com says:
a genre of science fiction set in Victorian times when steam was the main source of machine
There is also a wiki entry for those who are interested here.
The main purpose of the thread is to discuss steampunk related topics including fashion, media, art, and anything between and beyond.
I would consider myself somewhat novice in the realms of steampunk. I enjoy looking at some digital art and some items and machines made either to look like they run on steam or are otherwise very mechanical. Brass = win.
I also have a steampunk costume I’m working on, part of it can be seen in my avatar. It’s somewhat basic at the moment, and I need to accessorize it a bit, but it’s coming along quite nicely.
hey … i am quite a steam punker! but would call myself more of a steam nutter as i am more into firing/driving steam engines (in particular model steam locomotives). But i enjoy all the modding .ect done in steampunk and am busy reading “the difference engine” witch is apparently one of the better steampunk books?
I am sure in your interent searches found these two sites:
Not quite steampunk, but distantly related. I remember seeing a science fiction book jacket illustration once with what looked like mediaeval knights, with lances, riding penny farthing bicycles. Fantastic image.
As so many of our modern machines become anonymous boxes full of silicon chips that most of us can never understand, the appeal of good old fashioned pulleys and pistons grows.
I’ve been thinking about this on and off, but my skills are more pertinent to creating clothing/costumes, rather than modifying metal/plastic/whatever. But if skills and budget were not an issue I’d have a copper finish put on my frame, maybe stick on some gears (that didn’t actually do anything) to the spokes near the hub. I think having some silly, oddly shaped handlebars (either attached the the saddle/seatpost, or not attached to anything and just held in your hands) with a huge bugle horn on it and various other steamy things, like a lantern. And exhaust pipe under the back of the seat might be neat too, especially if you could figure out a way to make steam come out of it.
I think even unmodded unicycles are in keeping with the spirit of steampunk, anyway. They’re a Victorian invention that didn’t quite catch on, they’re whimsical, look like they should be impossible, and are very compatible with top hats.
So while it would be nice, I’m not in a rush to mod my unicycle. Maybe someday when I have a better idea of what I want.
I’m more or less into the steampunk style at the moment. I haven’t really modded any of my unicycles to my fashion yet, but I’m sure it will happen. Currently have two similar outfits I am currently working on to fit me properly. I’m working on making a couple waistcoats fit me. I still have a lot of accessorizing to do, but I know it’ll look awesome when I’m done.
Still looking for a real top hat, and monocle. Quality top hats are very hard to come by, and when you find them, they are very expensive.
I didn’t know about the word “steampunk” but now I think I live in one of the most steampunkish cities in the world:
Look what wonderful toys we’ve got here:http://www.lesmachines-nantes.fr/english/
OK, you might say it’s not hardcore steampunk but I’m pretty sure you’ll like it.
make a search for “les machines de l’île” on google image or “l’éléphant Nantes” on google image if you want more.
I went to the gallery last spring with my 5yo boy and found it amazing (I also got a free ticket for an elephant ride from a unicyclist friend who works there… It’s a blast!). My boy was a bit scared when seeing the machines running (you have to be prepared to get splashed with water) but he really enjoyed the elephant (he could move its tail with a lever and we had a private demonstration of “air-tube elephant screaming”).
The final project is really huge and is intended to become a kind of steampunk attraction park.
