My son Bruce, just turned 11, is a huge fan of anything Star Wars. Had a nice conversation with him:
Me: “So have you heard Disney is buying Star Wars?”
Bruce (sounding depressed): “Yeah, Mom told me.”
“Well, at least this guarantees there will be a bunch more movies and cartoons, right?”
“Yeah, but it’s Disney, so they’re going to be horrible.”
“Well, if they’re not any good, you don’t have to watch them.”
(with tone indicating I’m an imbecile) “But it’s Star Wars, Dad, so I’m going to see all of them no matter what.”
“I think that’s what Disney is counting on.”
Edit: Hmm, not sure why that’s not embedding - but a good video (work safe).
As science fiction goes, Star Wars was always kind of Disney-ish.
<ducks for the flames>
That video was very cute and well-made. But I was expecting Leia to do something other than just lie down and become one of them. The real Princess Leia wouldn’t do that.
Flame on! Yikes, you be a glutton for punishment. Good thing Bruce isn’t on the forum.
I agree re the “real” Leia. I think maybe part of the point of the video is that she doesn’t exist anymore.
Look on the bright side, I don’t know how Disney could come up with something worse than the prequels. I mean… they were about gaining political power via manipulating a trade dispute, a love story with zero chemistry, and an out of character fall from grace.
Snow Dogs with lightsabers would have been better than that.
Disney is buying STAR WARS?? realy?
What has happend? Does Geroge Lucas need any money?
Well, I like both. But, in my opinion, there hasn’t been a real great Disneyfilm like the old ones since “the lions king” and the old StarWars-triology is much better than the new one, so they’re both of the past, maybe. And I don’t belive, they’ll have a comeback if they work together.
They don’t want to produce good thinks, both of them want to earn money, so you’re right!
Disney’s press release from Oct. 30 is here.
“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said George Lucas, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lucasfilm. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”
I think I’d also be willing to say I have confidence in whoever wanted to pay me $4 billion, with $2 billion of it in cash.
You forgot to mention a whole universe of Jedi Knights being caught with their pants down by an army of Jango Fetts.
No, and now really, really no!
I’m going to toss out a prediction here; that the next iteration of Star Wars will be superior to Episodes 1-3, and possibly surpass the original films. Though it will be quite hard to unseat the original films due to their having pioneered the Star Wars universe.
But buying Lucasfilm is about much more than Star Wars; there’s a lot more there. And for Star Wars, the money is less in films than it is in all the associated merchandising; a major cash cow!
Just to be fair: Lucas has announced that he will be donating most of the money to educational charity. So it’s not that he’s some greedy old bastard. I suppose there really weren’t that many options of buyers to choose from if he wanted to sell.
