Star Trek Convention

GF and I went to our first Star Trek convention this past weekend. Other than unicycling (which I haven’t been doing since my knee hyperextension) it is one of the other weirdnesses in my life. We had to wait in line behind a guy with horrid B.O. on the way in, but besides that, it was a great time. There were people dressed up, but most of them had just the Federation shirts on. I was expecting more Klingons. We went on the day that Kate Mulgrew was the featured speaker. She was so cool. She started by saying “WE ARE BLUE AGAIN, PEOPLE!!” I have always loved her but now I am IN LOVE with her.

Anyway, if you are a trekkie, you should go once in your life. We plan on it again, but next time to a bigger celebration (like Las Vegas instead of Secaucus NJ.)

I went to one years ago and had a blast. I made my own NG outfit. I actually have the little insignia pin I purchased pinned to one of my unicycling medal ribbons and it hangs on the wall in this very room!

I have to admit I’m a sci-fi fan.
When I get the chance I pop up to the Birmingham NEC for their Memorabilia fairs. They’re a hoot.

I’ve always enjoyed Star Trek but not enough to be a Trekkie. Never really got into the spin-offs.

I just learned the origin of the Vulcan Salute. A little Google finds this is pretty much common knowledge but it’s new to me:

In his autobiography, I Am Spock, Nimoy has said that he based it on the Priestly Blessing performed by Jewish Kohanim with both hands, thumb to thumb in this same position, representing the Hebrew letter Shin (ש), which has three upward strokes similar to the position of the thumb and fingers in the salute. The letter Shin here stands for Shaddai, meaning “Almighty (God)” and has mystical significance in Judaism.

Also in I Am Spock, Nimoy explains how, when he was a child, his grandfather took him to an Orthodox synagogue. There he saw the blessing performed, and was very impressed by it.

Nimoy also coined the accompanying spoken blessing, “Live long and prosper” (Dif-tor heh smusma in Vulcan language as spoken in Star Trek: The Motion Picture). The less-known preceding salutation is “Peace and long life.” This format is similar to (and probably based upon) the Hebrew greeting, “Shalom aleichem” (peace be upon you) and its reply, “Aleichem shalom” (upon you be peace).
