stand-up surf boards

It’s a new sport for me and growing fast here on the islands.

It’s 10ft long, 28"wide and 4" thick. It made of epoxy, so it light (er).

Using a paddle taller than I am, I stand on the board and try to paddle into waves.

Catching waves is the motivation.

What great excerise. It works out alot of muscles. My legs get tired after a few minutes just trying to stay balanced. The muscles are always adjusting to stay standing on the board. But it’s different kind than unicycling(on the legs).

It makes riding on small waves fun again:)

that sounds awesome!

Hm, it sounds different…id like to try it

I don’t really get the difference from normal surfing…aren’t you usually standing up anyway?

In normal surfing you don’t use a paddle, and you don’t stand to paddle in to the waves.

I want to see a video. I demand video.

So what’s so extreme about it in comparison to normal surfing? After you hit a wave it seems like it’d be the same concept.

I don’t believe anyone said it was in any way extreme in comparison to normal surfing.

It hard to stand on a surfboard when you are not riding a wave. So when you are not on a wave, it’s a balance with your paddle game.

A bigger board is easier to stand on, but not as fun on the waves. It nice to have a board that is maneurvable. Giant tankers(12ft) don’t ride waves well, especially on bigger waves. The Laird Hamilton board is 11ft x 31" and I hear it’s not good for waves(unless you are Laird paddling into Jaws).

When your on a wave, standing is easy. That’s when you do the freestyle stuff like walking the board or standing on your head.

Ah ok, it’s just different before you get to the wave. I get it.

I wish I could ride waves like this!!! Some of the world’s best… enjoy

Look It all the old guys that can’t stop surfing. I bet they cant lay down and paddle then stand up old bones and joints. Do it on a Unicycle then post it.:frowning:

Looks like an appropriate variation on surfing for unicyclists. Don’t just balance while riding the wave, stay balanced all the way out there! Sounds like fun.

Now all I need is some waves. And a board. Sacramento is poorly situated for that sport, though we do temporarily have whale watching! Jacquie and I saw the whales yesterday.

Whales in Sacramento! Who wooda thunk.
You don’t need waves.
Waves were small yesterday when we were on our “stand ups”. So we paddled over to a pod of 50+ Spinner Dolphins. I kept my toes on the board.
You have good vision into the water on a stand up board. And for that same reason you need lots of sunblock.

Apparently you can catch small waves with them… and you can use the paddle as a rudder which is cool.
I saw an interview of the gyts who invented them (aussies) and it was really interesting, it’s less intense than normal surfing.

Also the first paddle-surfing world cup is being held soon.

No, you do it on a unicycle!

These old guys would steal all your waves. SUP (STAND UP SURFING) has big advantages.
Paddle into waves sooner and faster,
better vision to see waves coming,
and using the paddle as a extra fin(or rudder)

SUPs will dominate those “squaters” of traditional surfing .

It’s the “old guys” that gets new sports started. They have already done it all!
And their looking for something new. Also, they have the money to buy the toys. A new board and paddle will run over $1500.
This sport is growing way faster than I thought it would. Top local surfers are ripping it up on some sizable waves.

I just found about a contest on June 30th in Waikiki and I’m going to enter:) .
I have the two best workouts in the world…Riding MUnis and SUPs!

I believe SUP was started by the Hawaiians not Ausseys. The early surfers from Duke’s day were using paddles on their surf boards.(cira early 1900s)
