Squeaky bearings

I have a new DM Muni with 40mm sealed bearings. All of a sudden one of them
started squeaking. Kind of a dull metallic grinding sound. Very consistent. I
took the caps off, and one of them still squeaks. I took the Muni out in the
snow two weeks ago, got a flat and finally got around to fixing it today, then I
discovered the squeak. It rides fine, just irritating.

Could it be rust? Or maybe just a defective bearing?

Thanks, Joe

Re: Squeaky bearings

Well, im no expert on bearings or how wide your bearing caps are compaired
to the bearings themself, but I would guess that the bearing that skeeks has
one of two problems. the first would be that the bearing is simply needs to
be greased. This is something that is relitivly easier than the other thing
that might be wrong. The other thing that I can quickly think of to be wrong
is that the bearing could have twisted on the hub, so the bearing is at an
angle from the hub other than a 90º. This type of thing is common on Miyata
style Suzue Hub. What we do at my house is take a bearing puller, a cheap
one, and back the beaings off just a smidge. then they straighten up and it
will be fine. I might also be very, very wrong.

But remember, CONSULT OTHER PEOPLE BEFORE TAKING MY ADVICE!

Re: Squeaky bearings

Stupid question, but how do you grease bearings? I assume we’re talking about
the inside of the bearing. The squeak occurs even when you take the caps off and
turn the uni upside down, and rotate the wheel. No pressure on them. It’s hard
to get the tire off the fork cause the brakes hit the Gazz tire, but even when i
lift the wheel slightly out of the bearing cradle, I can feel something catching
or grinding slightly.

Thanks

Re: Squeaky bearings

You probably have either a dry bearing or some grit and contamination in
the bearing.

If you’ve been riding a lot in the snow you can get snow packed up all around
the hub and bearing. This packed in snow can get forced into the bearing driving
in road grit and forcing out some grease.

A bike shop should be able to replace the bearing or if the bearing is dry they
can regrease it.

The Magura brakes are easy to take off and put on. It’s just one bolt per side
and they are very ease to realign. It’s very quick to remove the brake so you
can pull the wheel out of the frame.

See http://www.magura.de/english/download/downloads.htm for a PDF workshop
manual for the rim brakes. It shows how to take the brakes off, maintain them,
adjust them, etc.

See http://www.execulink.com/~dtierney/wmc/Magura/geninfo.htm for more info
about Magura brakes along with hints and tips for maintaining them.
