sports content idea?

Ok, I just bought the domain name that used to be the official site of an
NFL team.

Any ideas of what I could do for content for the site.

I was thinking of a nuked type portal with sports stats and stuff.

  1. Depends on the team
  2. Depends on whether you like the team

Could be a vehicle for selling blogs (e.g. w/subdomains) to fans of the
team.

I like the team, but they are kinda sucking right now.

I thought of that as a possibility. I wasn’t sure how much of “bloggers”
sports fans would be.

Plus, I haven’t been able to get the blogware system up and running yet.

Good fan base there, that’s a plus

How much time do you want to spend running the site? If you have the time to
find news for the site I’d do a nuke site (Postnuke is best imho) with
message boards. If it gets big you won’t have to spen as much time as youll
find moderators etc…

I have seen blog plugin’s for postnuke so you can to that also.

Not too much

You like postnuke over phpnuke? Why’s that?

I figured there’d be more modules and addons available for phpnuke. I’ve
found a few that would fit nicely with the site (along with the mod_rewrite
one)

It’s part the past history of postnuke. The guy who wrote it is pretty much
a one man show, he would not accept any improvements from the general
public. There was also a time when it had a security problem a day or so it
seemed and the patches were very slow in comming out. That was the reason
postnuke was forked.

Now postnuke has the better code, add-in modules have almost no setup to be
done, they just work, They use the ADODB php Database class so using other
databases is easier (they still use some mySQL only sql so it’s not quite
ready for any db yet). The next version will use smarty templates so making
your theme will be easier, not to mention the caching features for a faster
site. From what I read the smarty system will be out anyday now as a module
so people can start using them before the next release.

There might be more phpnuke modules, but postnuke has all the popular ones,
and some like pnPHPbb are better than any phpnuke version. (Including
mod_rewrite… I have my site all set up to use it… It works pretty sweet
a news story url is something like hotrodding.net/News-story21.html and it
works with every module that I tried.

The Lions own the Raiders!!! rofl How sad that they’re down to their
3rd string QB. :frowning:

Letsee…a web site that appeals to Raider fans. A funny one would be
linking to anti-depressants.

Do you know what type of traffic the domain has?

right now it seems to be about 30 visitors per day (and already a PR5).

I haven’t put up a 404 redirect yet, so it could be a bit more.

It is linked to by some big places. It’s even linked to in the online yellow
pages (mapquest, yahoo yellow pages, infousa) as the official site.

I think if the Raiders were actually winning, there would be more traffic

I was going to use it for my 1and1.com site, but without mod_rewrite, I’ll
have to use my own server.

Re: sports content idea?

Only a Lions fan can relate. lol

But congrats to the Raiders on their victory yesterday!! Couldn’t have
happened against a nicer team too!

Can you point me to the googletap/mod_rewrite for postnuke?

I can’t seem to find it on the mods area.

Search for “short url’s” and look in the Theme section (Thats where the code
goes). I pulled the code from this theme they talk about on this page
http://www.mtrad.com/SimpleURL.php then messed around with it until I got
it like I wanted.

Cool…thanks!

I got that working…now I just need to figure out how to make it work for
the forums and forum posts.

if your using pnPHPbb

in functions.php add
$prefix .
‘index.php?name=(PNphpBB2)&(?:amp;)?file=(\w+)(?:&(?:amp;)?([tfc])=(\d+))?(?:&(?:amp;)?(sid)=([\w\d]*))?"|’,

and in your .htaccess add

RewriteRule
^(PNphpBB2)-([A-Za-z]+)-([tfc]?)([0-9])-(sid([A-Za-z0-9]))?.html$index.php?name=$1&file=$2&$3=$4&sid=$6[L,NS]

With that I get:

viewforum+.html

instead of viewforum+1.html

Re: sports content idea?

I moved that line near to the bottom of the functions.php file and I got
this:
PNphpBB2-f–.html

Man, this mod_rewrite stuff is crazy
