I think that even if a rock or big stick intrudes into your spokes, they
will tend to break at the ends and not in the middle. In fact, I don’t think
I’ve ever seen a spoke break anywhere except at the hub, or at the nipple.

Butted spokes are better. A wheel built with double-butted is more rugged,
partly because they hold tension better, partly because they distribute
loading better. As a side effect, butted spokes are lighter.
So far as the spokes are concerned, I’d expect most unicycling to be less
onerous loading than mtb downhilling, for example. There are loads on teh
wheel as a whole which don’t occur on a bike to the same degree, but I
don’t think single spokes see much difference.

Personally, all the wheels I build (bikes, but if I built a unicycle wheel
it would also be so) are with DT stainless butted spokes.
i just got back from the shop.i ordered a box of 14/15/14 butted DT spokes.i had to get the black ones of corse cause "they are the coooolest"at least thats what they said.there a buck each
the spoke u later on uni .com.uk said to use 244mm in lenth, the shop measured 245.5mm and based on what uni.com.uk says about DT nipples being smaller than most i rounded up to 246mm
