I had an odd mid-life-crisis type thought today (like learning the uni last year wasn’t odd.) Hmm… a tattoo. I know, I get that mental image too: a middle-aged woman with tattoos on her back, wearing a tank top so you can see them. Very white trashy. But then I had a brilliant idea, if it can be done and if the pain can be endured. How about I get a tattoo on the PALM OF MY HAND? Not even my shaking hand, but my alt-hand? No one would really ever see it, only me when I wanted to.
Thoughts please. And if this becomes the next cool thing, you’ll know you heard it here first from digigal.
I’ve always thought that if I got a tattoo, I’d want it on the palm of my right hand…and I’m left handed, by the way. depending on what it is, it could look cool. just need to take into account the fact that your palm is all wrinkly.
Tattoos are fun. Hurts like hell to get them, although everyone seems to say that women take the pain better than men - my wife certainly did - but they’re fun. And if chosen right very personal and cool (in a self absorbed sort of way).
Anyway, BMEzine, a website devoted to body modification has an entire section on hand tattoos. The first few pages I looked at didn’t have any of tattoos on palms, but if you flip through the hundreds you’re likely to find some. As a non-member you can only click on and view 150 or so images, so view them judiciously. (I don’t think there’s any limit on the number of pages you can click through, though. And once you have a tattoo, you can get a free month membership by submitting a photo of it.)
I don’t see many tattoos on palms. This might have implications of some sort, so I’d ask a tattoo person first. Also it’s a place you won’t be able to cover up, and may tend to make it look like your hand is dirty all the time.
Someday I will probably get a tattoo but I haven’t come up with the design I want yet. Probably some variation on the Uni-Cyclone logo. What logo, you ask? Yeah. That one.
Such a tattoo would belong on my “unicycle muscle,” on the side of my calf. I found an example, a tattoo on Sammy Hellwig (hopefully below).
I have thought it would be funny to tattoo pedals onto the bottoms of one’s feet. That would be less gross than a saddle tattoo covering the appropriate area…
it should be noted that hand/feet tattoos fade fairly quickly because of the wear on the skin in those areas and those body parts shed skin much much faster than the rest of your body. if you want a tattoo that no one else sees try bikini area or belly, or something. also, hands and feet have little fat and tons of nerve endings, this means tattooing said areas will hurt lots more than regular tattoos.
I would suggest maybe the inside of your wrist instead of the palm of the hand, I’ve seen a few friends get tattoos in that area and if you wear a watch or something else around your wrist they are hidden quite well.
I’m currently designin my next tattoo but alas no unicycles in the works yet.
i have a celtic knot around the second toe of my left foot
yes, i nearly got religion while the guy was going up and down the side
he also warned me that hand and foot tattoos do tend to fade as a result of the increased skin-regeneration in those areas
there are a variety of positions where u can place discreet tattoos
keep looking at pics, u’re likely to find an idea that resonates
ps: i’m getting my next tattoo next saturday
can’t wait…
Hey cool, I have a celtic knot around the second toe of my right foot. I think the guys in the shop were all very impressed that I didn’t cry. They were all watching. At the end the guy who was doing it said that usually he told people that they were responsible for their own tatoos once they were done but because mine was in such an awkward place I could get it touched up for free if it didn’t take properly.
Well, over my dead body. I looked after it very carefully.
My daughter is going to buy me my next tatoo for my 40th birthday, in November. I want something on the bit of flesh just behind my ankle on my left foot.
If you are worried about what a tattoo will look like on you years and years from now, then don’t do it.
People with multiple tattoos tend to live for today and to hell with what people think 20+ years from now and most of their freinds will have tattoos too anyway.
For a woman, if you want to hide it, put it up front below your waistline just off center left or center if it’s a semetrical design like a sun or something, still hidden by your swimsuit. Unless you are a nudist, no one will see it, and anyone who does will only say good things.
For a man, a less prominant place would be the back of the calf. That way when you are old and gray, your hiked-up plaid socks will hide it and your golf buddies will never be the wiser that you used to be cool.
Mine is on the back of my right shoulder, by the way. It’s a scorpion with dragon wings. No, I’m not a scorpio. A bunch of us from Army basic training when and got tattoos. I know. So typical. A bunch of people conforming together to do something non-conformist.
I have a devil on my left shoulder blade. Got it 24 years ago when I was a Senior in high school. I had it put on my shoulder blade so I wouldn’t see it much and thus, wouldn’t get tired of it…Well…I don’t see it much but I am very tired of it. The colors are all gone and the black outlines are wide and blurry. It’s quite an ugly site. I can’t say that I wish I’d never got it. It was cool back then but If I had the money I’d get it removed in a heartbeat. If you ask me…don’t do it! Take the money and treat yourself to a nice massage or something that will make you feel good.
we’re going to have to swop pics at some stage
mine came about because i got into rock-climbing and had to constantly remove and replace the toe-rings i’d been wearing for a couple of years by then every time i got into my rock-shoes
this got irritating so i thought i’d go for a slightly more permanent solution
i was working on a radio station in a fairly smallish town at the time and since i was known for going bearfoot (i wore shoes twice in 9 years - two funerals), the tattoo artists didn’t charge me for doing the ring around my toe
he said it would be a good publicity for him
it’s been about 6 years or so by now and it’s held up pretty well
I had mine done 18 months ago.
Mine came about because I wanted to wear a toe ring - I tend to spend a lot of time in sandals and kept trying different ones. However, my toes are a funny shape and toe rings weren’t comfortable. At the same time I wanted another tattoo. So I killed 2 birds with one stone.
I love it.
Me and my best friend (Andy Schwarz) got a simple unicycle tatoo on the sides of our arms up towards the shoulder. His on his left and mine on my right. It’s just black and has a circle as the wheel, straight vertical line as the seat post and a short straight horizontal line as the seat. Very simple but I love it. Some people don’t know what it is when they look at it, especially if they don’t know I’m into unicycling and they think it’s some kind of symbol. We had it done over 6 years ago and still looks good. T-shirts cover it up so the only time people see it is when I have my shirt off (swimming, sweating, etc.) so it hides pretty good when needed. I’ll try and upload a picture of it if I can in the near future.
BTW-It costed 50 bucks (min. charge) and took only 20 seconds. I siked myself up too much and expected it to hurt way more than it did so after I had it done and saw the needle and blood (not too fond of either one) I started feeling light headed and had to go to the bathroom to puke!! Crazy…
