Songs to live by

Are there any songs out there that really touch you? Seriously, no gay remarks, or anything like that.

For me, I would have to say
Cats in the cradle
Let it be
and Strawberry Fields Forever

I don’t know why, but those songs really touch me. Anyone else have anything like this?

Why don’t we do it in the road

Yo Kyle! Good to see ya back on ye old forums! Well, I love the beatles lyrics a lot as you know, and I also like all the ones you mentioned, plus…damn! there’s so many I’ll have to get back to ya on that!

gay dosn’t mean stupid fyo.

What you gonna do about me? by Richie Havens is one.

and a good song for when you have rough times in your life is obviouslt Mr. Tamborine Man unless it’s the Byrds version…

I wasn’t using gay in an instance of stupid

I was using it as a slang phrasing of the term “homosexual”

“Take me on a trip aboard your magic swirling ship, all my senses have been stripped, and my hands can’t feel to grip, and my toes too numb to sit”…cool words! “I’m ready to go anywhere, I’m ready for to fade, until my own parade, casts its dancin’ spell my way, I promise to go under it” Awesome! :sunglasses:

Amused To Death by Roger Waters… great song, but the entire album always gives me goose bumps when I listen to it

One More Cup of Coffee, by Bob Dylan

Gavotte in E minor, by J.S. Bach.

bob marley- 3 little birds

and

Bobby Mcferrin (i think thats his name)- dont worry be happy

dear mr. president by pink, so true… so true…

What a wonderful world - Louis Armstrong

lots of nice songs here!
Well, rise against - swing life away, is a clear winner!
but a lot of Damien Rice’s song are great, and patrick park! you should check them out, they’re great

Any song the the Guess Who. My personal favs are: No Sugar Tonight, Share the Land, and American Woman.

First one that comes to mind is “A Talk With George” by Jonathan Coulton… Awesome song about George Plimpton:

There’s a tall thin man standing in the shadows
When he calls your name his voice is strong and clear
It’s a dark and smoky place, so you can’t quite see his face
He pulls you close and whispers in your ear

And he tells you he was born into some money
But it didn’t mean he had to sit around
And he knows a thing or two about the things that you should do
If you don’t want to take life lying down

First of all hang out a lot with Hemmingway
Spend some time fighting bulls in Spain
You should go three rounds with Archie Moore and Sugar Ray
It’s so damned scary you won’t mind the pain

Be ringside at the rumble in the jungle
Make friends with Hunter S. and Jackie O.
And when they shoot poor Bobby down, you wrestle Sirhan to the ground
Love your friends and miss them when they go

You should write a book or two and start a magazine
Even if it never makes a dime
You should swing out by your feet above the circus ring
At the very least throw parties all the time

Time and tide will never care
Not so far from here to there
We just go

Enjoy yourself, do the things that matter
Cause there isn’t time and space to do it all
Love the things you try, drink a cocktail wear a tie
Show a little grace if you should fall

Don’t live another day unless you make it count
There’s someone else that you’re supposed to be
There’s something deep inside of you that still wants out
And shame on you if you don’t set it free.

Either I Love Onions by Susan Christie or Surfin’ Bird by the Trashmen.

“Talkin’ New York” by Bob Dylan, or maybe “You Can Call Me Al” by Paul Simon.

That’s an amazing album.
My teacher played with him a few times. He’s a cool guy.

Go here for a nice video of him in maximum coolness mode. The tune’s a little airy at first, but then picks up when he just takes Bach to Mars. By the end of it, he’s riffing on JSB in a manner I can only describe as jaw-dropping.

But back to Songs to Live By for $100. What is “When You’re Smiling”, performed by Louis Prima?

Billy Joel - Piano Man

“And the waitress is practicing politics, while the businessman slowly gets stoned. Yes, they’re sharing a drink they call loneliness, but it’s better than drinking alone.”
