If you don’t like them, what should I buy?
I have them and they are very comfey (I had the old ones as well which were good but the new ones with heh hard knee cup are even better), they have saved me numerous times from my own pedals as unlike lots of other pads they have some rear calf protection.
Buy them you won’t regret it
Buy those shin guards.
…or your shins will be beaten into a bloody pulp by your pedals.

I am using this.
More than enough protection besides for more extremes kind of riding. Doesn’t slip off, and is very light.
You can take a look at mountain bike guards, there are a lot more choices to choose from, depending on the level of protection you need. The KH one looks really well covered.
As much as I hate to advertise outside of the ‘Trading Post’, I have some brand new KH Percussions (old style) for sale.
I know this is wrong but I’m just trying to save you some money. 
I have lizzard skins, which I picked up for $40. They are fine. They work. I rarely hit my knee, and I have separate knee pads when I think I might.
Ok I’m convinced, I’ll buy them.
