Some random unicycling questions...

I’ve been building up some questions lately and I wanted to wait until I got quite a few to start a new thread. Most of these are questions I couldn’t find the answers to after searching, so please don’t get angry at me for not trying. Here it goes…

  1. Has anyone ever tried MUni on a giraffe? If so, videos?
  2. Has anyone ever tried to SIF backwards wheelwalk? It would be like log-rolling except on a wheel.
  3. Has anyone learned to glide or coast before WW’ing?
  4. When grinding, do you grind on the cranks or pedals?
  5. When pedal grabbing and grinding, should I take the pins out of one side of the pedal to preserve them? How fast would I wear them down if I don’t? (they are steel pins.)

Also, I think it would be cool if this turned into a question thread. If you search “question” in thread titles you get 30 pages of threads, all with only one or two questions in them.

If you have 1 question, maybe you could post it here first to try to prevent all the 1-question threads.

  1. Has anyone ever tried MUni on a giraffe? If so, videos?
  2. in Inner balance a guy is doing Muni-Trial on a giraffe.
    2. Has anyone ever tried to SIF backwards wheelwalk? It would be like log-rolling except on a wheel.
  3. in Inner balance again there’s a guy who is doing SIF Backwards WW.
    4. When grinding, do you grind on the cranks or pedals?
  4. i grind on the crank…
    5. When pedal grabbing and grinding, should I take the pins out of one side of the pedal to preserve them? How fast would I wear them down if I don’t? (they are steel pins.)
  5. i take the pins out, it’s easyer to gring and you can’t broke them!

i just watch Inner balance 2 times, it’s a really good movie.

  1. Probably, not sure why you’d want to though.
  2. Yes, I’ve seen lots of people do it. Dunno what it’s proper name is though.
  3. People probably have. Coasting doesn’t relate too much to WWing. I reckon learning one foot WW is definitely the best way to learn to glide though.
  4. You must grind on the pedal for narrow rails (round rails) or else the rail will get stuck between the crank and the wheel and you’ll fall off. For ledges or wide rails people usually grind on the crank because it’s more stable, but you can also grind ledges on the pedal.
  5. Yes. I take the pins out of one side of my grinding pedal. You slide much better that way. Also, pedal grabbing concrete will probably damage the pins if you don’t take them out.

As I recall, there are a few small giraffe MUni/trials segments on the DVD “Inner Balance”

Others on this forum have talked about removing the pins from one side and attaching a grind plate (Made of Lexan or other smooth plastic material). I have not personally seen this myself

Very definitive answers. Thank you.

No, that is a really bad idea. Most, if not all of your questions have been asked already, but you were probably unable to find the answers when searching for them because the thread titles were obscure or meaningless.

If you think 30 pages of threads with “question” in the title is bad, think how long its going to take to search through one thread where you have to read every post to find out if your question has been asked or not.

Having one thread for one question that is clearly titled makes much more sense and will be easier for everyone.

Eh, I guess you’re right. It was just a thought.

The best solution to questions is to have one thread stickied to the top of a board, with the first post (usually by a moderator) being constantly updated with a nicely organized list of questions with answers.

That sounds much better. It seems like it would work very well and no one would get too annoyed by it.

I’d offer to make and organize such a thread, but it has to be done by someone with powers to edit their post for as long as they want.

How it’s done on other (usually larger boards):

Posts with questions remain until they are answered. Once they are answered, they are removed, and the question is added to a list of questions in the first post. The question and answer are repeated together later in the original post, so that someone browsing through it could look through the questions first (nice and streamlined), and ideally click on the question (which is a link to lower down in the post) and see the question once again with the answer following.

  1. Has anyone ever tried MUni on a giraffe? If so, videos?
Yes. Not sure about videos but I have pictures. Scot Cooper used to do it at the earlier MUni Weekends. I can’t link directly to those pictures as they’re hosted on the Kodak Gallery, where you can only point to the whole album. Look at my MUni Weekend photos from '97-2000. CORRECTION: I was only shooting digital starting in 2000 so look there. Scot is on his MUni Giraffe, riding across a log on the Mr. Toads trail in picture #6 at the 2000 MUni Weekend:

  2. Has anyone ever tried to SIF backwards wheelwalk? It would be like log-rolling except on a wheel.
Yes. Me. Ryan Woessner is much better at it. I can still get into and out of it. It’s not like log rolling at all, because I’m putting weight on the seat, plus I have it to hold onto. Plus the log is really skinny. Plus there is no water. Plus I’ve never tried log-rolling, though I’ve seen it on TV.

  3. Has anyone learned to glide or coast before WW’ing?
Probably, because it’s a simpler pair of skills, even though it may be harder to perfect.

  4. When grinding, do you grind on the cranks or pedals?
Yes. You also grind on whatever is under them. Try not to rip up stuff that’s not yours.

Cool. I really want to try that.

That’s awesome. Plus the log-rolling comparison plus was to give people a plus visual idea.

There can be. I have a garden hose.

My goal right now is coasting/gliding, and it seems easier than wheel walking.

I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks.

A friend of mine did this. He’d only been riding 6 months or so and couldn’t do any other tricks. He’d ride one footed as fast as he could then take his pedalling foot off, then fall off. He did this 100s of times, getting further each time, and eventually got it. Within a month or so he could coast for 50 metres.

That’s awesome and great to hear! It gives me much hope.

Does 1ft’ed count? If so I did this!
I do have video of Julien Monney doing it decently with 2 feet (and total control), but the quality is low. But your question stoked me to put it online.

I guess Trevor (the one from Hackney, London), or another member of the Lunis did.

usually people search for answers, not for questions.

Do you have it on youtube or vimeo? That flash player doesn’t work for me. It sounds awesome, though!

Very cool. I’m working on doing that.

Someone else in this thread had a better idea, but I can’t remember what it was right now.

Like they are using any other technique than I do.
Please PM me problem and details (plugin version, browser, OS, servicepacks). I was the 1st who had Flex (dynamic flash on xml) running in Europe (after an former Apple Quicktime employee asked me), so I’m always curious if people have troubles with anything. I’ve checked my site in 88 different browsers. I guess your browser can’t deal with valid xhtml strict compliant embedding of flash. An obscure Linux browser? After sharing your experience, try one of the following 5 formats.

1ft ww bw - flash video SWF
1ft ww bw - flash video FLV
1ft ww bw - windows media
1ft ww bw - quicktime
1ft ww bw - real
Or go here for plugins.

I do have to disapoint you, last time I captured it, the quality of the VHS tape was even worse than it already was, so I threw away both the files as the original tape. I still may have a copied tape, but simply no time to search for it.

No disappointment there! That standupWWBW1ftSIF was awesome! How long did it take to learn that??? Also, I’m on internet explorer, but it said I had the wrong version of flash player, even though I have the most recent one.

Thanks. I’ve learned all my skills I put my mind on within 7 days, except coasting(10), and side-ride(8).
So this one… no idea, but for sure within 7 days.

Opposit to most other I use flash to detect flash, as I find that more reliable than doing so with javascript (that can be disabled). The newest Flash plugin is already making many flash creators angry for being very poor in backwards compatabilty. Sounds like this is the case here. Please PM me the version of your plugin.
