what are the age groups for them i get confused
in england its reception - 4-5
year 1- 5-6
year 2 - 6-7

Sounds like its the same. Kindergarten is 4 or 5, 1st grade is 6, 2nd is 7 and so on until 12th, by which time one should be around 18.
Schooling is also mandatory in many state until 18 instead of 16, although some state have exceptions with parental permission or once you have a job.
