So where are we with "Family Forum?"...the pink elephant in the room.

If you check the members list, you’d find that some of us have been around for quite some time. It seems that we’ve been reminding each other since the beginning that unicycling is a family affair for many members and that we have family members of all ages reading the threads. For many years, it seemed to to work. Our discussions were largely respectable and safe for even the youngest among us to read without threat of off-color topics laced with vulgarity.

But lately, it seems to have gotten out of hand. Gilby established long ago that this would be a self-regulating forum, and so it is. But how do we accomplish that regulation? How do we work to keep a lid on cussin’ and swearin’ and some of the off-color topics and pictures that seem to be appearing more frequently these days? How do we maintain our great forums as family friendly? Do we even want to anymore? Should we just let the forum flow freely in the wind and sink to a quality of that found in other forums? Or do we want to maintain something different and a cut above that of everyone else?

Just thought I’d ask.

When we first started unicycling, my sons were 9 & 12. We’d met so many unicyclists through the years that it was neat to see posts from them on the forums. So we would share quite a bit of these forums together as a family.

Edit: Plus, I would rather not read off-color stuff myself and I’m an old man, not quite as old as some (Raphael), but old still the same.

but we don’t have to use them in unfriendly or vulgar ways, I’m not going to say I’m not guilty of it on occasion myself but I do try to keep my posts family friendly we all should.

I agree with Yoopers. There have been many times when I wished I could have recommended this site to a neighborhood kid or student. Unfortunately, if I endorsed Unicycle.com the way it is now to any of my students I know I would face disciplinary action.

I myself would also not like to read some things or see things I’ve seen on here. Over the past year, I’ve become accustomed to colorful language etc and have accepted it as an evil I must put up with in order to enjoy the rest of the site.

oh oh quick someone made a thread on how bad unicyclist is now. someone quick link my thread, QUICK!

take a chill pill and don’t be a jerk, please.

Hey, I’m someone now! I’ve finally made it. I need a pat on the back.

Hey V, what is “Inherit the Wind?”

oh jerrick isnt linking my thread. he said he would.
im pretty chilled already thanks. you should see me, im just sitting here laughing at all you americans. this is because i have the opinion same as many other countrys and shit, that all americans are stupid. whether or not it’s true i don’t know (although i can have an educated guess[unlike americans]ZING!).
lol at unicycling community.

Case and Point. Prejudice is never the way to go.

haha yes well done whatever your name is, cyber pat on back.

You know what would be pretty funny? if i got banned for this. that would seriously crack me up.

Your posts have annoyed me for a long time. Today nothing has changed.

You wouldn’t be the only one that got a kick out of it.

hahaha Good life.

who else would?

doesn’t give you the magic ability to be condescending to “the americans” we may in fact be stupid but there’s no reason to generalize(yeah yeah yeah I know you’ve all heard this before) you’re trying to make it personal and starting to sound a bit prejudiced.

hahahaha, it wont let me add myself soz man.

Why is it so important to shield children from bad words? They will learn them anyway sooner or later, be it through peers, angry parents, etc. Go anywhere on the net (even “porn” free YouTube has loads of vulgarity) and you’ll get your mouth full.

I’d rather you sat down with your own child and explained to them what words mean and when to use them. Is it really the job of a community?

I also find it funny that US is so puritanical, but can account for a large percentage of porn and teen pregnancy (in first world countries). It’s all a facade.
