So whatever happened to Jack Wiley?

So whatever happened to Jack Wiley? Just curious. Does anyone know of him other
than from his books? Just wondering if he’s part of the modern unicycle “scene?”

Jack lives in Lodi, CA, not too far from me. Though I have spoken to him on the
phone once or twice, I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never met the man. The
Unicycling Society of America sells several of his self-published books, which
are drop-shipped directly by him, so we know he’s still out there.

He hasn’t been very active in the unicycling “scene”. In fact, I don’t think
he’s ever been to a unicycle convention or meet. This is too bad, as the
unicycling events have come a lot closer to where he lives.

I should really give him a call again and see how he’s doing. For those of us
that read his books, he is probably one of the primary figures at the back of
our minds telling us how to do the basics. When I think back on my early days of
“research” into unicycling (not that there was much to find), I see two guys.
One is Steve Smock, the guy in the old Schwinn booklet, which contained some
brief instructions on how to ride, mount and idle. The other is USA founding
member Dr. Jack Wiley, dressed all in black, showing us how it’s done.
