Snowy ride home

As I finished work today i realised it was snowing…Hurrah, we don’t get a lot
of snow down here in the south of england. Then I saw what kind of snow…Booo,
Hiss, wet slushy stuff. Then I remembered I had the Coker with me
today…Hurrah. Now I’ve done my first snow ride on the Coker, it was a lot like
riding in the rain, only very cold . Who else is riding in the Snow out there?

We are, we are! That is, my sister Tammy and I are. Here in snowy South
Dakota we got about 2" of snow one night and it’s been snowing lightly since
then. I rode my CyclePro with MTB tire to school on Friday, and only fell off
twice on the way there and once on the way home! Brush up on my nonexistent
MUni skills.

Re: Snowy ride home

I wish we have snow here in Hong Kong so the F.U.N. girls will experience a snow
ride. We only have cold and rainy weather so we ride down the steep hill with a
wet road instead… ----- Original Message ----- From: Sarah Miller

Re: Snowy ride home

What’s snow? I think I remember hearing about it once in a fairy tale.

I went riding in a summer rain storm instead.

I’m dreaming of a hot Christmas…

Mee! Well, it’s actually already the second time this winter. The first time, it
started during the day. I had my 28" with the slicks with me. So I had some
trouble going home in the evening. I didn’t fall, but I once had to dismount
(too many people at a train station) and I couldn’t get up anymore after,
because the road was to slippery. I had to walk a few metres to find a snowless
spot to mount again. The next day, snow was already melting and it was very very
hard to ride. The snow was so sticky and there were deep traces from cars and
bikes, that made me dismount (and fall :frowning: several times. Now it has snows
again, but this time it’s very cold. I rode yesterday and today and it’s fine.
There’s already hard ice and snow on the roads and you can ride quite fine.
What’s really hard is dismounting, as the grip of my shoes isn’t half as good as
my tyre’s. BTW, I’m using now my new carbon fibre unicycle from Roger. It’s a
26". The frame’s from carbon fibre and everything else (apart from hub and the
saddle) is made of aluminium. I have very knobby downhill tyres. You can’t use
the on tarmac because they have nearly no friction, but on snow they are really
great. It’s like teeth in a soft bread.

lars, who’s hoping that the snow only melts after Christmas, so he hasn’t to
ride to work in sticky slushy stuff.

Just as soon as I’m done writing this message I’m on my way out the door to ride
the white stuff. We just received about 2-3 inches (5-8cm). I’m eager to test
out the knobby Club Roost “Thrust” 24x1.75 tyre that I acquire through Osell’s
about a month ago. This tire has been great on and off road but i’m not sure
what it will do in the snow. Yesterday I put in order for two more tyre’s that
i’m going to be using to experiment with studs.

If been riding at this time of night (it’s almost 3a) quite a bit lately, but
never with snow or at the current temperature of 9 F and -11F windchill factor.
Actually, i usually leave around midnight and ride for about 2 hrs. but I think
i’m going to keep this ride under 5 miles.

Re: Snowy ride home

That sounds great. Here in California we are having the opposite weather. It’s
been warm since last week. Today I rode in on the Coker with shorts and no
shirt, and arrived hot and sweaty! It was 62F at home when I left. The temp
right now in San Jose is 73F/23C. It’s great!

How about riding at night? I finally tried it a few times with a flashing light
attached to my fanny pack, a reflective vest, and a helmet-mounted bright
headlight. The first time I tried was fantastic - set an all time speed record
of 18.3 mph on a slight downhill! It felt like maybe 17 - what a great surprise
when checking the max speed meter. The second time, I had two crashes that were
real surprises. Both times, I was just riding along, luckily at only 12 mph or
so, and went over a small unnoticed bump which launched me. Suddenly I was
running along on the street with no unicycle.

Anyway, winter is a great time to ride, and night commuting isn’t that bad. I
hope you all have great weather for the upcoming BIG fullmoon on Wednesday! Get
out there and enjoy.
