Snow muni in Australia

Hi all

Snow muni in Australia - sounds like an oxymoron doesn’t it? Anyway, down
the southern part of Oz (Victoria) we get enough snow to play, just not
enough to be really familiar with it.

What do people wear when they ride in the snow ? I’m worried that if we
wear Goretex and the full ‘cold’ outfit then we’ll all cook as soon as we
start to exert ourselves.

Any mods for the unis ? Any gotchas we should watch out for ?

Thanks for any advice.

Regards

Phil

Phil,

I haven’t Uni’d in the snow… yet. But the basic cold weather rule is,
“layers”. You want to be able to add and peal as the weather and your
energy exertion dictates. Good Luck!

What to wear? When riding around Toronto (Ontario, Canada) in the
winter, it generally depends on how windy it is and if it’s actually
snowing. If it’s calm and clear, you don’t really need to wear much - some
sort of water-resistant/proof pant, a fleece jacket, hat and gloves. If it’s
snowing and windy, I normally avoid going out but if you do, then some sort
of shell is a good idea. Ski goggles are also nice.

In any case, you need to be really careful when turning because skidding
out is really easy - even with a wide, knobby tire.

As for modifications, there’s instructions for making your own studded
tire at www.muniac.com although I’d be afraid of using anything like that.
I’ve also seen studded bike tires for sale although I’ve only ever seen them
in the 26" size.

Gday Phil,

It is a good idea to use a spiked tyre- I got a European one and then Gabe
put 200 self tappers through it. After that I could slalom down some steep
snow! THEN it is a good idea to get some gloves as they will shred you
hands. Stick with the layered clothes.
