skipping rope

I’m progressing VERY slowly with skipping on the Uni, has any one got
helpfull sugestions on how to work out an ideal rope length? The other
problem I have ( apart from wrapping the rope round my pedals) is
twisting. The wheel and with it my feet tend to twist to the left after a
couple of bounces, leaving my body and arms and thus the rope behind, so
the 3rd or 4th sweep of the rope hits the wheel side on, very annoying.

sarah who now has a nicely grazed knee from getting the rope wrapped
around the uni and falling off side ways this morning.

Hey, Sarah-

Are you doing THAT on a Coker?

When you skip rope, you say you rotate. Do you rotate just hopping with no hands on the seat keeping the seat pinched between your legs? That is, do you know if the rotation is related strictly to the motion of your arms? Maybe you can partition this problem.

Hi Sarah,

You know I started skipping pretty recently. I don’t twist as you say you
do.Does this happen when you do hands-free hopping? If so, perhaps you
should work on that for a while. So far I have only skipped on the 20".

I have the rope long enough to click on the floor as it goes under the
wheel - I like the click, click, click sound. Be careful that it’s only
a light touch on the floor or it’ll bounce up and catch the wheel.

Do you stand on the cranks when you hop? I keep my feet right by the forks

  • this means:

Less torque on the cranks Better grip on the uni - gripped with feet
as well as thighs Better control of the uni - maybe this would stop
the turning

Ouch.

If you’re using a heavy rope and you’re skipping fast, make sure you’re
wearing long trousers. That rope will hurt if it catches you. Been there,
done that (and I was wearing jeans at the time). :-}

I can only help you with the choice of rope as I’ve only progressed to the
falling off stage of unicycling.

I don’t know if you’ve ever seen them but there is a skipping/jump rope
made out of plastic tubing, about 2 inch lengths, strung on a rope like a
necklace. When swung this rope makes a nice round “U” shape rather than a
“V” shape. It will stay away from your feet and peddles I’m sure.
