single speed bikes

Are any of you guys part of the single speed movement in the bike industry?
not unicycles or cruisers or bmx.
I have a soma single speed mountain bike and a giant bowery single speed roadbike.

Do you mean like the people that basically use single speed downhill bikes similarly to BMXes? If so a friend of mine is really into that, he has sponsors from a couple of the local shops and is pretty much getting free bikes now because of it.

not quite my single speed mtb is complely rigid, altough some are hard tails

maybe like the fixie thing? Spudman just got my old bike “fixed”, my brother his uncle sold him a hub and he put it on, and took off the shifting stuff and the rear brake. see this thread.

its almost a rebelion of sorts, alot of bike mesngers use them

yes like spudmans. just be carefull the wheel doesnt slide back

i converted my 10 year old mtn bike to a single speed, i’d love to get a surly or something though. thinking of getting the redline 925, it’s a road bike with a flip flop type hub with fixie on one side and single speed on the other. i know mojoe(does he still post?) used to go fixed gear mtn biking.

I have a Bianchi BuSS and fixie commuter frankenbike. I also ride geared bikes though. I have a 1x9 hardtail and 2x9 road bike.

downhill mountain-fixie’ing sounds like it could be dangerous

Downhill unicycling sounds like it could be dangerous.

Why “movement in the bike industry”? Is there a fashion for this again at the moment? A sudden urge by the industry to sell less-complex equipment at a bigger mark up? It could happen.

Every sport has its purists. When I used to be a keen bicyclist, there was always someone in the club who was going through a phase of swearing by the merits of the single speed, or even the fixed wheel. They usually got tired of it after a while because they couldn’t keep up with the group.

By the same token, my previous motorcycle club divided into 2 strokers and 4 strokers. The 2 strokers further subdivided into those who insisted on premixing the 2 stroke oil with the petrol because they didn’t need the unnecessary complexity of an oil pump, and those who thought autolube was a big step forward.

But in answer to the original question, no, I don’t have a single speed or a fixed wheel bike, but it is one of the things nagging in the back of my mind as something I’d like to try. Having bought two unicycles and a motorbike this year, I think I’ll have to wait.:frowning:

fixed

I’ve had a ss for about 7 years (i think). It’s one of the early era Surly’s the Rat Ride. I got so much crap for building it up. Everybody said the same thing… “that’s stupid, how you gonna keep up with just one gear” Now it seems like every one of those wankers has a SS now.

I don’t ride the Surly as much these day… SS really sucks when you’re out of shape… plus they’re getting so common on the trail. That’s why I bought a uni. I can hear those same wankers now… “that’s stupid, how you gonna keep up with just one wheel”

Who said I wanted too???

I ride a fixed gear track bike.
Coasting and brakes are for whimps.

Hunter - I thought your bike got stolen. Did you get it back?

When i switch from my pista (fixed) to my mtb Street bike My mtb feels broken
and i think the fixgeer and ss movements are 2 defrent things

Over here in Germany the SS community is rather small but vivid. There are several events over the year around Europe. For instance, the SS Euorpean Championship in combination with an dusk till dawn race is upcoming in August in Germany. Most of the times those events are for fun (e.g. there is the German bike and beer cup) though some guys take it very seriously.

Well, even with not a whole lot people having a SS, you are not as unique as one used to be. In these days even Cannondale made SS bikes…

It appeared to me it was some sort of a small hype, going back to the roots etc., but now only the individualists are still in. So, you are not alone my fried

uh… yeah

My trials bike is a single speed.:o

i’ve been dreaming of biking to work on a fixie instead of this damn “REI” mtb.

true.

I’d hardly call it a “movement”, but it is a laugh.

Don’t tell anybody about this:
