I want to learn how to ride a unicycle, and eventually get into some freestyle. I was looking at the torker lx, but should I get a 20" or a 24". Im 5’10, and I would use the bike for casual riding as well as freestyle; eventually lol.
Oh and also, are these the same bike or do some parts differ? Which is better?
For casual riding the 24 will be more versatile. The 20 is easier to learn on, and maybe easier to learn tricks on, but by the time I started learning more than just riding I was committed to my 24 so I can’t speak from experience.
From my research it seems like the Torker LX hasn’t changed since the 2007 version when the strengthened the seat tube/crown joint. I think the only thing they added this year is a new red color. So the two that you linked are most likely identical.
I think the first link is mistaken. It lists 175mm cranks, which are huge. I don’t even think you would really be able to ride it if they were actually that long. most 20in uni’s come with 125mm cranks or something close to that. a standard 24in usually comes with 150mm cranks, which give you more torque and allow you to more easily climb hills, etc, like the low gearing of a bicycle. For freestyle though, you are going to want something significantly shorter. My 24in freestyle came with 125mm cranks, which I think are great for flatland. But I digress…
a 20in will be more responsive and snappy, while a 24in tends to have a slightly slower and more deliberate response.
IMO, if you are planning on riding any kind of distance or doing hills, go with a 24in, but if you are just going to be riding basketball courts or other flat surfaces I think you might want to look in to a 20in.
Thats just my two bits though. It’s different for everyone.
Either way, I would not recommend hopping on an LX. They aren’t really designed for that kind of abuse. Especially not the cranks.
My basic unicycle for learning new skills is a 24" Nimbus. I can hop and ride backwards and idle and do a few other basic freestyle tricks, so it is certainly possible to learn on a 24".
A 20" may be better for learning tricks, but I have little first-hand experience. I find a 20" irritating to ride because it is SO SLOW. A 24" gives you a basic jogging pace, but a 20" puts you in competition with old ladies with walkers.
If you plan to get into hopping or riding off curves or just bouncing it around a lot, you may want to get a more sturdy model than the Torker LX. If you do not hop on it, the Torker LX will work fine for you.
I think the 24" would be a great option for a first uni. I’m quite tall, and i rode mountain bike a lot before i started unicycling, and i actually chose a 26" lx for my first uni. A 20" can be easier to learn some skills but i was glad i had something i could actually ride for longer distances. I’ve had a 20" lx as well. As long as you keep the spokes tight, these wheels can take all the abuse a beginner can dish out. They survived hopping up and riding down stairs, learning sidehops, drops, ect. With that said, when your skills progress to the point that you do these things regularly, you’ll need a stronger cycle.
I’ve had my 24" Torker LX for more than a year, learnt to ride and hop on it, and still do all my muni with it (I changed the tire to a 2.3", the pedals and the seat). I rarely do drops over 1 foot with it though (the latest video I posted contains a couple, with fairly soft landing), but I haven’t yet bent the cranks or the hub.
It’s definitely not as strong as an ISIS hub, but it’s not all that bad (your experience may vary though).
