shoes

I just bought a pair of skate shoes today. All I can say is, “wow!” They
made a huge difference in my wheel walking and gliding. I had been using a
running type sneaker (with as flat a soul as I could find) which was
working reasonably well – my biggest complaint was that wheel walking
tended to destry the heel portion of the shoe rather quickly.

The skate shoes I got have a perfectly flat soul, and appear to be
constructed well enough that I won’t have to worry about the heel thing.
On my first try gliding with them, I actually ran out of hill, a first for
me (the hill’s only maybe 20 yards, but hey, I’m still learning). After
that amount of success, I decided to try my muni with it’s 24x3 gazz tire.
To my amazement, I was able to glide a couple yards with it.

Gliding is so much fun once you’ve started to get the hang of it

Jeff,

How dense are the soles on your new sneaks? I use Pumas from time to time. They have the flat sole but I find them a little too flexible, with not enough padding. After a long ride or hard slip, my feet take a beating.

I saw a lot of people wearing Chuck Taylors on the “One Wheel, No Limit” video.

I have a pair of old Dexters with which I had the soles replaced. They have no heel and they are just about worn flat. I think I prefer riding with them on.

My friend and I are interested in learning to glide and wheelwalk. Did you get started on it by going along a wall or something? I’ve tried it for a few minutes and the whole feeling of my feet being up in the wheel was a tad scary.

Jeff,

What are skate shoes?

I can get this:

Skate shoes are shoes worn or specificly made for skateboarding. They have
flat, non treaded soles (not COMPLETLY flat, um, im not sure how to
describe the tread) They are generally well padded, some for looks, some
for functionality. Many have hard stiff souls. so that they dont flex as
much. They are also generally constructed very well, as long as you get a
pair that are ment to be used and not just looked at.

Ahh…No wonder I’ve not heard of them. I should have asked my boys first.

The shoes I’ve got are Vans (forgot the specifics). The soul is great for
wheel walking, but I am certain they won’t take a lot of gliding. (I
bought the shoes on Friday, and by Monday, with some examination, I could
see the start of wear where my foot is in contact with the wheel.) So I
guess I’ll be looking for a new pair in a few weeks.

As for the learning process, I do not believe in walls. I find that if I
try holding onto a wall, I will not balance myself as properly and
therefore do not learn very much. For wheel walking, I just found a flat
parking lot, and worked on going from an idle to wheel-walk. For gliding,
once I could one-foot wheel walk a few steps, I just started trying to
glide down a hill, and eventually, something just clicked. I’m still weak
at gliding any distance on flat land, though.

So, just keep at it. Wheel walking and gliding will take a while to learn,
but it’s definitely worth the time. And once you’ve got it down, you’ll
absolutely impress anyone who’s ever tried to ride a unicycle.

Skate shoes are designed for skateboarders. There are true skate shoes,
and there are shoes which borrow from the style of skate shoes. I presume
the primary difference between skate, and skate style is durability.

I have a feeling it’ll be a while before I discover what shoe is right for
me. I have made a large step, though, in discovering that a skate type
shoe is far superior to a running style shoe for wheel walking and
related tricks.

Converse all stars are probably the best known, least expensive shoe
which has the same sort of soul as a skate shoe. (The converse are also
much more flexible, and have almost no padding, making the unfomfortable
in my opinion.)

Myself and Trev were discussing shoes last night in Durham because he had
destroyed the pair he had by WW and Gliding. I bought a pair of Hush
Puppies almost a year ago now in the sales and there is almost no wear on
the sole! They are also offering good grip and are comfortable. As for
model and cost… don’t know except they have a soft swade blue top, the
letters HP on the side and a white wrap up sole. Cost: I got them in a
sale for £5! I wish I had bought more pairs now.
