What shoes are best for street riding?
That’s not a good question. What is the best food to eat?
OK, you can ask differently:
- What shoes do you prefer for street riding?
- What shoes are most popular among Unicon street participants?
- What shoes would you suggest I try for…
- What’s Mimo wearing?
- What are Vans?
You get the idea.
Something healthy, delicious, and not expensive
OK. Something good looking, durable and not expensive.
Will I get 100 likes for this smart and creative answer?
I prefer pedals with metal pins and then I wear shoes with flat soles , so the pins can stick into them. Doesn’t matter if it is for road, muni or trials, as long as my feet don’t slip off the pedals, though my 20” freestyle uni doesn’ t have pins.
Maybe for street it is the same as for freestyle, where you need to take your feet off the pedals more often? Then pins might not be that suitable. I prefer the flat soles also because I have a better feeling with the pedals, as opposed to running shoes with thick soles. I reckon you will just have to try it out yourself and see what works best for you. We’re all different anyways.
These look like the ones I have, not exactly the same, Adidas has many different types. I’ve had them for many many years and I had to replace the inside soles/cushions. Of course my ankles are not protected, but that is not so important with the way I ride unicycle.
I really like my Etnies Estralla Ryan Sheckler Pro Skate shoes, but that particular model isn’t being made anymore so they’re not so easy to find these days. I bought two pairs of them when I found them in my size (back when there was still a decent inventory of them being sold). These are the ones I have (I prefer the black over Ryan Sheckler’s trademark red version, which were also available at the time):

If I needed to buy a pair of shoes now, I would probably go with the Etnies Marana Skate Shoe, which I think is the successor to the Estrella. They come in some pretty neat colors and designs. I think they look real nice and I find them to be great for riding. And you can often get them for a good price.
Here are some links to a few of their Marana model that I found quickly on Amazon:

I’m fairly certain this brand has lots of other styles in this model, as well as several of their other similar skate shoe models. Let us know what kind of shoes you wind up getting and how you like them.
I really like Ride Concept’s “Powerline” (discontinued, but can be found on-sale for cheap). They’re lighter weight than 5-10s.
Definitely something with flat soles, usually “skate shoe style”. Vans have been working well for me (certainly price to performance wise).
Others really like five tens (freeride or sleuth), which I like for Muni but are too stiff for riding street for me.
