Anyone have any suggestions for shoes for someone learning intro muni.? My Brooks running shoes are trashed and are slipping off the pedals. My pedals are plastic Odysseys.
Haven’t taken the Uni off road yet, mostly off curbs, and dirt filled weed patches and doing some hopping.

I’ve been riding my uni’s with some quite okay boots until they died this
week. I’ve got a pair of approach (multi-activity) shoes which are kind of
like boots without a low top to ride in today, but haven’t had a chance to
test them yet. I find nice grip and a bit of a heel helps off-road. I
don’t ride with the pedal locked in the heel all the time, but you
sometimes find, especially going downhill fast, that you lose a pedal and
catch it at the heel and it saves you a fall.
You’ll probably find more of an improvement from getting a pair of metal
pedals than from getting new shoes, I use these:- http://www.unicyclesource.com/Wellgo33043.html on my muni, uk
unicyclesource does an imitation version which I use on my coker and have
had no problems with. The wellgo ones lose the reflectors very quickly,
pedal is fine though. With pedals like these, your feet will grip the
pedal very well, so well in fact that you’ll probably have problems moving
foot position at first.
The width of the shoe can be an important factor too. I have a pair of Pumas and it is far easier to mount with them than if I wear my clunky Sketchers. But when I slip off the uni and my foot jams into the street, the sneakers provide no cushion.
Find some tough shoes or sneakers with a fairly slim design. As for tread, slicker shoes allow you to adjust your feet better, but they can slip when you hop around. You may also be able to take an old pair of shoes to get new soles put on. You can select the best match for the pedals. Then you can brag to your pals that you have a custom uni with special custom shoes!
Maybe skate/bmx shoes would do the trick?
Another tip… find a local shoe store that is going out of business or having a major clearance. I’ve managed to get a pair of Dexter shoes for 80% off and I still have them after 4 years.
I would reccomend some flat soled shoes. Skate shoes work well for me.
Some people like boots though, because you can “lock in” infront of the
heel. For Skate shoes, nice features are padding, stiff soul, vents, and
durrability. For padding, make sure you buy a shoe with padding that will
actually be of use. Many shoes are just over padded on top and on the
tounge for style, and arnt functional. Goto a place that sells BMX shoes,
those would probably be nice. Other options would be dirt jumping shoes
which will probably end up being TOO stiff. Im using Emerica Johnsons
right now. Read the review:
