Shin Guards?

I want to buy some shin guards but I’m not sure what’s best to get. Should I look for some that go all the way from the bottom of the leg to over the knees or something smaller? Also, can anyone please suggest any particular brand of shin guards to get. I’m looking for something that wraps all the way around your leg to protect the back of the leg as well.

Thanks,
Andrew Carter

I’ve had my Lizard Skins for 4 years now and they are great. The hard plastic and foam inserts are easily removed so I can throw the guards into the washing machine. They cover most of my calf and have saved me many a time.

get leg armor with shin and knee pads, preferably a soft shell armor (with out biig plastic cups on the front and knee) if you can i know thers a pair with armor on the back too

look at roach and 661 thewir thw best

Thanks for the advice. I’ve been looking at those 661 shin and knee pads. What is the material that goes around the calf. I’m wondering because the 661 elbow pads only have a really thn mesh for part of them. I hit my calves more often than my shins. There’s also one brand that heaps of unicyclists use including Kris Holm. Do you know what brand it is?

Thanks

Re: Shin Guards?

I think you are probably referring to Roach armour, Andrew. I just bought
some Roach ‘legs’ a few weeks ago and wore them on their first off road ride
today. So comfortable and made me feel pretty confident knowing the I was
well protected.

Andrew,

The back of the 661’s isn’t that thin mesh you see on the elbow guards. It’s a little thicker and denser than that. I personally in 9 months of riding have never hit my calves, so for me that isn’t an issue.

Maybe someone who has tried both, can tell you if there is a difference in the fabrics of the Roach vs. 661’s.

If you can afford the Roach, go ahead and get them. My guess is that they might be a little bit better made. I can’t complain about my 661’s. I have been very happy with them, but they are starting to wear where the seams protrude wear ever there is a corner. I have, however, worn them a great deal and fallen on them as well. This may be normal.

Thanks everyone. ‘teachndad’, I noticed that you’re into mountain biking as well as unicycling. Are the 661’s good for mountain biking as well?

Andrew,

I actually haven’t ridden with the 661’s on the moutain bike. So, I couldn’t tell you. It’s been gathering dust ever since I got my MUni a year ago.

Have fun!

Anyone else have any comments or suggestions?

I’ve been using Hard Nox legs for a while and they’re good.
The main point about them is that they are relatively well ventilated and so my legs don’t get so sweaty.
They have no calf protection though so you just have to take the odd pedal bite but they’re good for those like me that don’t like wearing pads.

I ride my mountain *ike with 661’s (4x4) . They work great. After a few
rides you won’t even notice them.

Re: Shin Guards?

Go roach, they rule. I’ve worn both SIXSIXONEs and Roach and my 661’s are in
tatters. The roach are the way to go, custom colours!

Where do i get them?

Ive read quite a few reviews telling this other guy to get roach legs for riding… Well I bought my muni two weeks ago and Ive come to the realization that my soccer shin guards aren’t quite going to cut it. So, after searching for some shin guards and such, I dont ever recall seing anything about roach anywhere. Can somebody tell me where I can get these things? Chances are it’s going to be mail order as I do live in the corn fields of Ohio while I am here at college… Also, would there be any reason for me to invest in back protection? Ive got a messed up kidney from a medical prob back in 2nd grade:( and I’m wondering how often I would be glad I had some protection for back there.
Thanks,

Re: Where do i get them?

Good old trusty unicycle.com:

Roach also has their own website:

Have fun,

i’ve got some norco drop pads, which i quite like, they look just like roach pads do. especialy because they only cost me £14 at a sports shop which was selling off end of lines.

leg pads although the protect you legs tend to leave your ankles quite vulnerable, get some football shinpads with decent sock-like ankle gaurds and cut them off leaving just the ankle part, then wear them with your leg/knee pads

My main concerns about leg armour in general are the elastic stretching and the pads restricting leg movement. Any advice on this?

I’ve got the 661 4x4 with integrated kneepad. They do restrict the
amount of kneebending but not in the range you need for normal riding.
And I have long (170 mm) cranks. I don’t hop seat out so I can’t tell
about that, but others have commented that they are no restriction,
practically.

yeep!

lol thnxxx

Well, luckily I found an online translator for garglemesh and this is what I found:

lol anyway…

661 is a popular brand, and I would recommend their 4x4’s. I would recommend them even though they protect your knees, but I would suggest that you get ones with knee protection. If you are sure you don’t want knee protection, 661’s Veggie Wraps would be good. I can’t find them on their website, but they were selling them not long ago. Another brand is Kris Holm, which are made for unicycling specifically, but I have not tried them. They are called Percussions. They also protect your knees.

Hopefully this helps!

P.S. Welcome to the Forums! And thanks a lot for using the search function and not creating a new thread about shinguards!

661 - Veggie Wrap available at a good price here
