Does anyone have experience with either Shimano XT or Shimano Deore
cranks? With the Deore cranks at unicycle.com, has anyone had problems
with the helicoil retapped threads? Scott Bridgman, this seems to be your
area of expertise, is this connection strong enough?
To help with any answers, I’m 5’10", 130 lbs., and will be doing both MUni
and trials with these cranks. Generally, I don’t do big drops unless it is
necessary (but then I love 'em!). I have broken 3 sets of Lasco cranks
since summer and it’s really annoying. (I’m not stupid enough to keep
buying the Lascos. The first set was bought in ignorance and the second
set was purchased when I went to the LBS and he told me they were steel
cranks that would hold up fine; the third “set” is the “good” crank from
both previous sets because I didn’t want to stop riding.)
Thanks, Jeff “I’m burning cash on cranks here” Tuttle

as far as i know, you cant get xt cranks un the 4 face taper anymore, ie it only comes splined and wont fit on a unicycle axle. I have tried both though. I used two left deore cranks on my unicycle, one with a helicoil i installed myself.
Theoredically speaking, the hellicoil is supposed to be a stronger peddle connection than just a tapped thread in an aluminimun crank, because the helicoil is stainless steel, dont know about that, but i do know that the crank went at the axle befor it went at the peddle.
Personally, id go for the monty set of trials cranks, you can fit these on a uni left and right with no modification at all. there a bit heavier than shimano, but stronger!
I’ve had a couple of sets of shortened (175mm to 138mm) and retapped Deore
cranks and bent the rear hopping crank on both sets and the chocolate foot
crank on the last set. This was after a few months in each case and they
got me through many 2-3’ drops in that time. My landing technique at that
time wasn’t perfect although it wasn’t that bad either. Oh yeah - I’m
guesstimating I weigh in at around 150 lbs.
They are very light and have an offset which I personally like. Now, I’m
not up on my Shimano tech but, the XT are more expensive right? Going on
that you’d expect them (rightly or wrongly) to be stronger… or is it
that they’ve got a nice black paint job Either way you’ll get much more
life out of them than Lascos and they certainly lasted me longer than
steel 125 Euro cranks.
If you’re looking for an excuse to buy a Profile hub and cranks here it
comes… you’ll be saving yourself money in the long run. It means a bit
of extra weight but the piece of mind it gives you when riding lets you
get on with the job at hand.
