SemXLW frame and Monty tire

After seeing the successful project of bending a SemXLW frame to fit a 3" gazz, I decided to bring my 20" XLW frame to school, and see how tight the fit is on my friends Monty. To my surprise, the frame fit on the wheelset without any bending at all. There was hardly any clearance, slightly less than with the 24" United frame. The wheel was a little out of true, and if it got to much more untrue, it would rub against the frame. I don’t know if this would work as a unicycle, but I thought I would let everyone know that it does fit, at least in my case. We took some pics of the clearance with my friends digital camera, but he dropped the camera on the way home from school, and all the pics got ruined. We will take some more on Monday, and post them.

I’m considering getting a Monty wheelset for this frame, now. I figure if I have to much problem with the wheel coming untrue and rubbing, I can bend the frame in slightly. Its a touch decision, though, because I was planning on getting a freestyle wheelset for that frame, and if I got the Monty, I wont have anything ideal for skills.

Re: SemXLW frame and Monty tire

I’m looking at getting a bunch of Sem XL’s for a school off-road team, and I’d
like to be able to swap in Monty wheels for when they do trials. You said in a
post last week that a Monty wheel fit in the Sem XL frame, but you weren’t sure
it would be very usable. Have you had a chance to try it out yet? Is the Monty
wheel you are using built around a Suzue hub?

Thanks,

I had read somewhere that the widest wheel the SemXL could hold was 1.75". I have a 24" model and I too have wanted to swap out the tire for some time now.

Maybe the 1.75" is the widest you can put on the standard rim. I think you might have to change up the hub to go wider. But I can’t see how a much wider tire would fit.

The other problem is that the XL is not designed to be a trials uni. So too much abuse is evenutally going to break the hub. Might be a safety issue to consider.

But so far my XL has held up great. Good luck!

Re: Re: SemXLW frame and Monty tire

I was able to get it to fit, and I rode it around for a little while, but I guess I wouldn’t recommend it unless your willing the bend the frame, which could weaken the unicycle. I was using my friends Monty wheelset with Suzie hub.

I’ve decided to use the XLW frame for a freestyle wheel, and get a Nimbus II frame with a Monty once unicycle.com gets them in
stock.

Darrel, we are talking about the new SemXLW frame, which has much more clearance than the XL.

Re: SemXLW frame and Monty tire

Correct spelling is as David wrote it: Suzue. That’s pronounced Sue-Zoo-Eh.
