I bought the camcorder I wanted tonight; firewire card and editing
later. In the meantime, I am able to dump very crude and primitive 15
second videos over usb from the camcorder.
I have one of me admiring my unicycle. Its absolutely pointless, but
there it is. I also have one of rhysling (Chris) licking his inner
thigh (relax; its all in jest). So, while these aren’t really
unicycling videos, they are close.
Oh, and I didn’t get Chris’ permission since its 2am.
Later, Chris and I may put some short videos up. I know in my case, as
a newbie learner, I would like to be able to upload videos to my site
so I can ask “hey guys, what am I doing wrong here” etc.
In my defence: I’m much more flexable than that, Lewis is just trying to impune my character.
BTW: I got chaced off the steps of Jackson City Hall, yesterday. They were perpairing for some sort of flag-waging cerimoney, and I should have layed low. Now I have to ride 4 blocks north to find a decent flight of steps- the State Capatol.

Wow! I own a camcorder one day and already I’m making people sick.

of the first. In the mean time, I just need to learn a steady hand.

supposed to slip my hand in there so the strap will keep the cam
steady as it sits in the palm of my hand. Today I hope to be more
stable, but yeah I will definitely get a tripod soon.
As to Chris, yes he is more limber than shown in the video, but
generally only when unconscious.
I liked the videos. I like unicycle baby guy, too. I thought the effect you were going for in the bedroom shot was as if you were RIDING another unicycle while filming the first. This is art. You’re going to be competing with Lutkus for technical content as well, I’ll wager.
You can see why I told you not to turn your back on Chris. That thing with the leg will get him evicted not only from Jackson City Hall but from the state of Mississippi entirely. That has “escort you to the border, boy” written all over it.

Make your best effort to support the camera always. I hold the camera
with
one hand on the side, through the strap, and the other hand on the
bottom
of the camera. Both elbows are in contact with my body whenever
possible –
they touch my stomach when I’m standing, my legs or a nearby table if
sitting. And whenever panning around, move very slowly.
And of course, if you really get into it, there’s a ton of artistic
talent
required to make a good video… which is why I generally settle for
technically adequate, and not nausea inducing.
As long as I’m talking cameras here, does any one know if a mini-dv
camera
exists which has one of those flip out side color LCD viewers, and a
black
and white CRT viewfinder? I know they’re making great advances in LCD
quality, but for my eyes, nothing beats the contrast of a B&W CRT.

Hey, thanks Jeff! Great tips. I need them. I will try these out next
time I film, they sound reasonable. Too bad I didnt read this in time
to film Chris on Saturday.

Thanks for the encouragement! As for Chris, yes he is dangerous,
and he laughs at me. Well, I can understand that, how could he not?
Speaking of video, I have even more unicycle videos up of Chris and
me. Now, let me say now, they may make people seasick though I tried
to be more stable with my footage. Also, some of them are up there
just for the humor, and nothing shown in the videos is anything you
havent seen before (Chris doing cool stuff; me failing at my curb
mounting practice). But feel free.
Really, I’m just putting up the links to the video here so you’ll have
some insight into the personality of the guy (rhysling/Chris) that is
flaming you in these forums.
Seriously, Chris is a great guy. Once again, these videos are for

Most of the ones I looked at when I was buying mine had a black and
white LCD viewfinder. From what I can make out the only ones with a
CRT viewfinder are the professional models, not the consumer models. I
have seen CRT viewfinders on older Video8 camcorders, but then you’re
sacrificing image quality for better viewfinder quality. In general I
find the viewfinder gives better contrast than the screen even with an
LCD viewfinder, this is mainly due to the lack of reflected light. On
the flip out screen you can at times see absolutely nothing, even with
the “low reflection” coating.
You know, one of these days I’ll get round to posting something
properly unicycle related rather than a response to a techie question.
One month and one week to go to my birthday, then I’ll be allowed to
get out and play on my Pashley (provided the 80mph winds we have today
don’t return). I’m sure I’ll have something more uni related to say by
then!

The new videos look great. Chronicling your progress is going to be helpful for others. The clips are much more steady and they show basic skills in brief clips. I was somewhat apprehensive about dowloading the one with “goat” in the title and then was disappointed when it turned out to be so benign. The ones with “bad_mount” in the titles were also somewhat misleading. Did’t Chris already tell you you’re mounting with the wrong foot??? Jeez…look at the video, man!! I can’t mount that well with the wrong foot. You’re doing a great job. Keep it up and keep posting the videos.
Right now I am just having fun and shooting whatever happens, but it would be cool to just put up short clips of basic things like that. Chris can demonstrate a lot of basic stuff right now, and maybe I can put up footage of what it looks like when a newbie does stuff.
Is this humor, or am I really mounting with the wrong foot somehow? For the curb mounting practice I was doing, I changed my mount foot every few tries. I will do 3 with the right foot, and 3 with the left, etc. Part of the reason is just because, in order to keep me balanced while I am getting the uni and everything else where I want it, I am really putting a lot of pressure on the leg that is touching the ground (at least until I leap up and that foot becomes the forward foot).
I think a lot of my problems that day were air pressure; the next day I put more air in my tires and I was doing great (although the next day, which was yesterday, I was just riding, and starting from wall mounts).
Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed the videos. Once I get over the novelty of just shooting video for its own sake, maybe things on the site will shape up.
