Sem seat

Matt, Yup, I’ve done it. On a Schwinn/Viscount actually, but I understand
that it is nearly identical to Semcycle’s seat plate. I broke it on a cold
winter day (but I don’t know if it was cold enough to make a difference)
while hopping. It was back when I was first learning to hop so I think I
used my hand to push down on the “nose” of the seat to land.

So I was riding my Sem that I’ve had for a few years, and suddenly,
the plate of metal in the seat snapped in two. Has anyone else had
this happen? I’m sure it can be welded in place again, but it sure was
a surprise.

Were you hopping or jumping or doing anything that would exert a large downward force on the front of the seat? I did this with a seat that has a plastic plate. It bent and weakened the molded plastic but didn’t break.

If you weren’t doing anything bizarre, I would complain to the vendor from which you bought the unicycle. The part could have had a stress fracture in it when you bought it. If they won’t replace it I think it would be faster, cheaper, and better to buy the plate/seatpost (I don’t know how the Sem seat is made) than welding it unless you can weld it yourself.

Mine hasn’t snapped, but it has started to go. There’s a crack about an
inch long on one side. I didn’t notice this until I removed the original
seat in order to replace it anyway.

I’ve heard of other Sem seats snapping, but Semcycle will replace most
parts for free.

I broke my miyata seat base like that. It prompted me to go carbon fiber.
It happened about a minute into an 8 mile total ride, on a 24" The metal
plate cut into my airseat and popped it. It was one of the least enjoyable
rides I have ever had.

Whenever that kind of stuff happenes to me or people I’m riding with, it
always happens at or near the point where you’re furthest from the car.

Nick is great at breaking stuff. Anyone here designing parts should take him into consideration for a tester.

Since Nick finished his ride, that was also the case here.
