This weekend I took part in the 20th Annual Seattle to Portland Bicycle =
Classic. I rode it on my 28" semcycle. I travelled with over 7,000 = bicyclists
(they usually have 10,000) and 1 rollerblader. Although a = unicyclist started
the race about eight years ago, he quit early in the = event, and I was told
that I am the first unicyclist to finish the = event.=20
The whole ride is approximately 200 miles. It can be done in one day =
(200) or two (100/100). I did it in two days, averaging 11.0 mph on the = first
and 10.1 on the second. It took me 11 hours to finish the first = part and
14 for the second. The difference in time represents longer and = more
frequent breaks on the second day.
The only major problem that I had was the heat. It was 85 degrees on the = first
day and around 90 degrees on the second. All of my training has = been done in
cold, rainy weather. My feet were very sore during the = ride too, but to my
surprise I am not all that sore the next day. =20
Although the STP is not a race, I did finish before numerous bicyclists.
The event organizers and participants were really supportive of me = taking part
on a unicycle. It turned out to be a great opportunity to = promote unicycling
as a sport and to get some training for the Unicycle = Across Minnesota
