seatpost shocks- any machinists willing to take on the challenge?

Hi all,

Although it isn’t a priority compared to issues like seat, frame and hub design, there currently
isn’t a decent seatpost shock out there for unicyclists.

Telescoping posts don’t seem to offer sufficient torsional (twisting) strength over the long term
(they get wobbly), and the geometry of trapezoidal (thudbuster quadrapivot) style posts means that
they don’t contract with a vertical-downward force (they’re designed for a down-and-back force
that you’d exert on a bike frame).

I think that some version of the thudbuster quadrapivot design
(<http://www.thudbuster.com/index2.html>) would work well, if built so that it could flex
vertically downwards.

One other option is to buy this post and reverse the shock mechanism. This involves removing the
shock from the post, turning the shock around 180 degrees, and putting it back together. This
kinks the setup (the shock is no longer aligned vertically with the post) and allows the shock to
flex downwards. However it means that your unicycle frame is no longer vertical, which looks
awkward and I think it also affects performance (for some reason makes it harder to climb hills).

Any takers to work on this?

Cheers,

Kris.

Kris & others,
Beware the wrath of Thudbuster for infringment of patents …
… they sued and closed down Moxey who produced a similar (and better)
post.
U.S.E. in the UK also developed a similar post that looked sufficiently
different but they never had the confidence to bring it to market.

I heard about this lawsuit.

My thought is that someone could make a new seatpost, that could attach to the existing shock
mechanism for the thudbuster. The difference would in the angle to which it attaches to the shock
mechanism.

How about a oleo and scissors link? (Sometimes called ‘Torque link’)
They work well in aircraft undercarriage
and work with a true vertical movement.

(this is for a steerable one but you will see the idea)
