seat drag

Does anyone have tips for learning seat drag?

I start by riding forward, seat-in-front, then I toss the seat down in
front of me. If I’m having an exceptionally lucky day, I’ll make 1 or 1.5
revolutions before my poor balance causes the seat to veer left or right,
and me to fall off.

Aside from working at an effortless seat-in-front, is there really
anything else I can do to help learn, without diving all the way in?

As for dropping the seat to the ground, it it best to just let go, and
allow gravity to bring it to the ground, or should I apply added force to
get it to the ground faster (though, with more bounce once it hits)?

Jeff,

Are you able to ride an ultimate wheel? Seems learning to UW first
would make things much easier. I am pretty decent on my UW, though I
haven't tried any seat drags.

Dragseat

I can only tell about my experiences in this skill:

U should not ‘throw away’ your saddle. I do seat in front with the saddle very wide extended. So the way to the ground is not so long and it do not interrupt you so much. If you throw away your seat with a lot of speed, it is hard do stay on the wheel.

riding dragseat:
the first and iportant rule is ‘do it with speed’. If you ride fast, you have more stability and you do not fall so quick
You should not have your legs streched. It is better to go down very deep, so your center of mass (center of gravity) is not so high.

hope i could help you

The problem is, I’ve got a 26" UW, and would like to get seat drag on my
20" unicycle. I think learning the UW helps a bit, but not substantially.

In our club there is an Ultimatewheel, but i cannot ride it. I learned seat drag before I tried UW. If there is a good day, I can ride perhaps 5m on UW

Riding an ultimate wheel and doing seat drag are very different… I can do seat drag pretty well, but I can not ride an ultimate wheel (mostly because of a lack of effort). These are different because for an ultimate wheel, your feet are in close to the wheel, and the wheel rubs against your legs and help your stability. In seat drag, your legs do not rub against the tire (if done right) and are farther away from each other. Also in seat drag, you have a mass out there in front which somewhat stabilizes the wheel from twisting as much.

For learning to seat drag, you want to get good at seat in front. Extend the seat out as far away from you as possible and once you get good doing that, start to only hold it with a few fingers and work your way to holding it lightly with just one finger. Once good at that, you should start to drop the seat. Don’t push it too fast down, just dropping it works best (although you may want to experiment and see if pushing it down works better for you).

For seat dragging, you want to make sure you have enough speed, as going too slow will make you more unstable. Also, you want to keep your legs stiff, meaning that your muscles should be flexed (and not relaxed). Then it’s just a matter of practice.

Hi Jeff,

I think that learning the UW as in riding a real wheel with cranks, not
the UW disk, definately helps learning to seat drag. Also it helps to
practice riding seat out in front (way out in front) while trying to hold
the seat as loosely as possible.

I would recommend making sure you are crouching just a little. Wear that
Roach of yours, helps a lot for learning. for lack of Roach use Long
pants. and when “Throwing” your seat down make sure that you push it
straight down from the back, and no pressure to the side. This will help
you start out straight.

One other thing, can you right Seat in front with only one finger
on the back of the seat? That might help.

All I can think of now. and keep trying, it will take awhile.

One other thing- I think that there are pedal positions where it is easier
to let go of the seat and start seat dragging. If I hold the seat out in
front with my right hand, I usually drop it just as my right foot is
coming around the bottom of the rotation.
