Screwed up my knee, trying out the banjo

Well, while riding last week with Patrick Thomas I managed to do something nasty to my knee. The ride back to New Jersey over the George Washington Bridge was rather painful. I can get around no problem, but if I put pressure on the knee it hurts and if I do any pedaling, unicycle or exercise bike, it hurts like hell. I guess I’m going to have to see a doctor eventually.

In the meantime, I have jumped on the banjo bandwagon. I’ve had this banjo that a college roommate gave me years ago sitting in the basement. All the talk of others taking it up got me to go out today and get some strings and a how to book. I’m looking for someone around who gives lessons. I broke three 4th strings today, just learning to tune the damn thing.

Course as a conspiracy theorist, I’d have to say that I think John Drummond has put something more than just banjo.com bumper stickers in them there packages.

Wow… I thought you had screwed up your knee trying out the banjo. Well reading that definately set the whole thing straight.

I think it should have been a semicolon.

Awesome! I just wrote a song on my banjo called “If Only I Had Friends”

It’s the most sickeningly sweet tune you’ve ever heard. Go juxtaposition!

Same as Robbie. Soon as I read the title I was like, how the hell’d he manage that.

David

this happens when you forsake Tull.

because he

…came from alabama …

I’m learning to play the violin, it took awhile to get a teacher, I was on a list for awhile. It’s hard, but fun, like unicycling, speaking of which, I have good news. I was trying to one foot ride today, i’d take pressure off the left foot, trying to get used to it, also tried putting just like my toe on the left pedal, I think once or twice I got all the foot off of it, maybe by accident. It started off as once around, going over the top with the right foot was scary at first, cause other times i’ve tried it I inadvertantly glided, you know, that period where you’d like to fall, but can’t, which makes it hard to land on your feet when you do fall. Anyways, none of that today, and I progressed to two revs, then found I had to keep pushing harder, then letting it roll through till I could push again. I also started putting my left foot against the frame which helped. I wanted to put it on top of the fork, which is why I got a square fork, but right now thats up too high for me to maintain balance, it’s a 24 inch, right now this works ok. I showed my 9 yr old friend Caleb, who can one foot for about 5 revs, although if he didn’t just have his left foot bent and put it on the fork I think he could go longer. I wasn’t liking him too much cause he could one foot and I can’t, and then he started riding backwards a bit, which I could do, but he picked it up sooner than I had, but I think i’m doing the same thing only with one foot, so now we’re even. Josh whos 12 can hop now, which Caleb can’t do, but calebs learning to idle, which Josh can’t do, so yeah, it’s fun. Oh yeah, a guy at work rode my uni, he said he rode a few years ago, and I think his brother had one. And this guy I met today also has one and rode mine well, so other unicyclists are out there, they’re just not always keeping up with it, oh well.

Yeah I highjacked the post, but it’s keeping it alive isn’t it? your welcome : )

Oh yeah, banjo.com sells violins, so this was related in some way.

I just found a banjo teacher. Start lessons Monday, October 4th. Knee still hurts. My banjo wont be on it.

OK, so I’m getting this vision of a unicycling bluegrass band. I play the mandolin. Just imagine, tight bluegrass licks while doing precision unicycle drills on stage. The upright bass might be a bitch though. Maybe a bass with one little wheel on the bottom of it. :sunglasses:

Lol, of course it would only have one wheel, two wheels aren’t good for anything : )

Thats cool that you found a teacher already, your lessons are on the same night at mine. I had my 3rd tonight and it went well, and fast. He’s pushing me pretty much I think, but I also think i’m not pushing myself enough, plus we only get a half hour, and then I have to find time to practice.

I like the sound of a blue grass unicycle group, and I like the looks of it too, : )

Andrew

I should hope not. Hold the pot between your legs. Not even that, rest it there.

He already has a banjo teacher ! : )

Andrew

Just trying to help :frowning:
