Scrapheap Challenge (UK)

Hi,

Who saw Scrapheap Challenge yesterday evening?

The challenge was for two teams to build a motorised monocycle - a big
wheel with engine and rider seated inside (hamster-like).

The program included a few clips of “proper” motorised monocycles being,
er, driven? ridden?

The judge was the current holder of the monocycle-land-speed record
(something over 50 mph).

Watching the two teams “racing” their creations was most amusing.

I’ll check for reruns in case you missed it.

Regards,
Mark.

Mark,

They also only had one cartoon showing a Clown on a Unicycle. I agree it was very entertaining watching them being ridden.

For any people in the US lookout for the next series of Junk Yard Wars, both programs are made by the same company (with the same female presenter). Usually both series use identical challenges so Monocycles should be on soon.

Have a ferret around on this web site
http://www.dself.demon.co.uk/museum/museum.htm
there is a whole page dedicated to monowheels. There is also a link
to Kerry McLean site. He was the TC on the show. Check out his V8 monster.

Have a look here too http://www.bicyclecommuter.com/Monocycle.htm
If anyone has any ideas as how I would go about importing one of these
into Britain, could they please email me? I guess a good start would
be if someone out there in cyberland has the address of the manufacturer.
I’ve been trying to find out for months, without success.

Yeah, one’s too many but I was trying to gloss over that.

It looked like courage was required more than skill or technical merit.

Junk Yard Wars usually turns up over here too (possibly on a satellite
channel) so I’ll keep an eye out for that.

Apparently the US has a channel called TLC, possibly related to Discovery?

Anyway this UK version is showing on TLC here are the details:

Monowheels
First Round Winners
It’s a truly revolutionary challenge this week as the teams are asked to make massive one-wheel motorbikes or monowheels. The teams race to build a bizarre vehicle that allows both rider and engine to fit within a single tire. But as the brave teams soon find out in our hair-raising test, riding a monowheel is even more difficult than building one.
