Schlumpf oil

Bruce,
I’m no expert, but the bacon fat seems like it could be the culprit. If it can clog your arteries I would imagine it could clog your Schlumpf. Possibly too viscous and full of chunks. Try flushing out the hub with some sort of solvent that will remove the bacon fat. The obvious choice after all of this kitchen chemistry is dish soap, but I’d highly recommend against that. No need to start rusting the innards. Maybe white gas? Inject 10 cc, swish it around, empty it. Repeat 32 times. Do this outside and away from any flames or sparks.
Or maybe you should just fess up to Florian and tell him you treated his space age technological whizbang gizmo like it was breakfast and beg for his mercy, forgiveness and a way out of this mess.
Corbin really knows his Schlumpf details much better than I do, but honestly, bacon fat has no place in a Schlumpf. You are going to have to get rid of it sooner or later. Might as well do that sooner and see if it works, before you start messing with the mechanics, which might be just fine.
I can’t wait to tell my kids. They’re going to have a hoot over this one.

So, the outcome of this discussion of Schlumpf oil science, is…

We want fairly, but not very, viscous oil for our dear guni hubs, but likely not bacon fat.

I have a syringe of chain-lube, with slightly less than a petroleum-jelly-like consistancy. Do any of you guys think that would be sufficient, or too viscous? Should I, like naturequack said above, get a narrow-spouted “gear oil” bottle from the auto-parts store?

BTW, Bruce, what’s your hub’s status?

Pretty darned viscous

I tried some oil in my Schlumpf grease dispenser and quickly found that that was wrong – it just ran out and generally made a mess and made me realize that the original contents of the dispenser was definitely grease – pretty thick.

TomB suggested Phil Wood’s Waterproof Grease for Ball and Roller Bearings. Available at all finer bike stores, and apparently “Selected by Esquire Magazine as one of the 80 Things A Man Should Own.” So there. I’ve only put a few hundred miles on since switching to Phil, but it’s been working fine. YMMV, caveat emptor, no warranty expressed or implied, etc.

You could try going to Phil’s web site at www.philwood.com, but apparently he forget to renew the lease so it’s not there anymore. This will have to do:

Gear oil is probably too runny. If it runs out of the Schlumpf dispenser then it’s too runny. Of that I’m certain.

I have my first Schlumpf on order, so I don’t know what exactly it comes with yet.
But if it comes with grease I would think Florian could tell us what kind it actually is. Unless it’s some kind of secret.
Maybe it’s made by little orange people called Schlumpfa-Lumpfas.
More likely blue I guess.

Once I asked Florian about the Oil, and he replied that it can be any oil. I am using gear-oil that I have for my motorbike. Of course it is leaking through the bearings. But according to Florian this is normal. Instead of adding 5 ml per year, I am adding 1 ml every 2nd month.

Well he’s got a fair excuse - he died last month. :frowning:

(I’m sure the company still exists though)

If anyone wants to use the same grease that Schlumpf Innovations ships with their hubs,
you can buy it here.

cool…did you buy a bucket for $115 or so?

I guess if your sell ~10-15 packets at $15/each you’ll break even.

corbin

Yeah. The cost of syringes, mailers, and postage add a bit too. It would be nice to break even, but even nicer to make a few bucks for my time.

At the current pricing, I’d expect it would cost Schlumpf owners as little as $4 and probably no more than $10 per year.

Does that seem reasonable to folks?

Great idea, and totally fair for you to come out a few bucks ahead in return for this service.
Order placed and PayPal’d.

Cool uniShark. Thanks for the feedback and the order!
(I’ll be sending it out first thing tomorrow morning.)

Order arrived already – super quick, y’all. 5 syringes as ordered. Each holds a bit more than 5ml (i.e. generously filled). Packaging was fine, quality padded envelope. Might be a slight possibility of the syringes getting crushed where not in a box, but they are pretty sturdy, and it wasn’t a problem on this shipment. I also note that the syringes are very clean. Like, bafflingly clean – how did you possibly fill these syringes out of a bucket of grease without them coming out all oily? Whatever, I am pleased to benefit from your magical grease handling skills.

It’s nice that you offer this, MuniOrBust. First I thought it was crazy expensive (not from your part; the oil), but then I realized that

  1. “No additional charges for tax or shipping. Ships worldwide.”
  2. $1 is not ~10 Swedish kronor anymore (it’s 6-something).

That’s very reasonable, I’ll order a 5-pack when I run out of mine.

@unishark - Thanks for the feedback! I don’t use magic, I just worked out a system. I’m glad it’s appreciated!

@hansc - I’m looking forward to your future order! Thanks man.

nice…

My 5-pack arrived from MuniOrBust today … 3 days after I placed the order … shipped from New York to Utah! (Me thinks MuniOrBust needs to teach his shipping tricks to the folks at UDC-US. ;)) And, like uniShark’s, mine came through clean and in perfect condition too.

Hats off to MuniOrBust for taking on this project … and DELIVERING to the guni community. :stuck_out_tongue:

UPD in Utah

I haven’t seen a single grease order in months! Are there any thirsty Schlumpfs out there?

If you have a Schlumpf hub and want some grease, you can buy some here.
I use PayPal and shipping is included in the price.
