Schlumpf hubs: general discussion

My GUni just went on a diet and lost 3 lbs!

It did require surgery though…

Seat post was too short so that is why I swapped the frame, took off the brake earlier because the line was too short, might put a different one on after I get a longer seat-post and switch back to the 24" frame. And swapped out the Duro/DH tube for a chopped and spliced 29" tire and regular tube. More info on that here.

Went for a quick ride this evening to test out the tire and see how this thing feels with the pedals in the 125mm hole.

Started in the 150mm hole to compare more directly with the Duro, the tire felt way lighter (Difference is actually quite large at 1040g) and the 150s felt pretty silly in low gear. Got on the road and shifted to high, the cranks still felt quite long. I climbed the hill going out of town and switched to the 125mm holes at the top. Started in low again and thought “this feels better” shifted it up and Yeeeee Haaah, I felt like I was on a big wheel again. I started spinning, the tire started humming and I am convinced I was right up around proper coker speed.

Went down the hill, took the turn to go on the gravel road and did a running UPD off the front. The thick mud just stopped the wheel in its tracks. Deciding not to finish the loop (2 miles soft gravel, 1 mile slushy streets) I turned around and went back home.

No troubles at all climbing in 125mm and high makes me think that maybe I should go bigger than 26 when I re-build the wheel but I still want it to be good for MUni so I think I am going to stick to my plan.

Did I mention that this thing is awesome?
