Saving Ankles

Does anybody know how to keep from kinking your ankles too much (as in your toes
shoot toward the knee) doing drops, something short of riding with my heels on
the pedals?

Ankle braces? Technique?

I have tried pointing my toes downward as I fall, with some success. I have
moved my feet forward farther on the pedals, and lost some vertical hop and some
balance in the process. I would love a brace effective enough that I wouldn’t
have to worry about it.

Chris,

I’ve been using ankle braces called “Active Ankles”. Dan Heaton and David
Poznanter also use these. They are highly supportive laterally but do not
restrict any other foot movement (you could go for a jog in them and not be
uncomfortable). Check out an orthotics shop- they might have these.

Yes I’ve done this too but I can’t see how to protect for this without
restricting necessary ankle flexibility. Mainly I’m interested in preventing
sprains from jumping off the uni onto rough ground.

Re: Saving Ankles

Kris,

Didn’t you ever do a big drop with the pedals under the balls of your feet and
bend the front of your foot up toward your knees? That’s the kind of movement I
want to restrict. Unfortunately for me Active Ankles do not restrict movement in
this direction.

Re: Saving Ankles

Hi Kris!

We’ve been offering Active Ankles since the 1999 California MUni weekend, when
David Poznanter mentioned them. Here’s a link:

Re: Saving Ankles

I consciously shift my foot position when going over a big drop or starting a
bumpy section. I shift from the common ball of the foot position to having the
arch over the pedal (I move my foot forward an inch or a little more). I was
also having the same problem before this. But for the larger drops you’re
doing…I’m not so sure. You probably have to be Superman or something.
