San Francisco Airport

Does anyone know if you are allowed to leave the airport when on an international flight? I am going to be there from noon till 11PM on a layover between Saskatoon and Melbourne.

If I am allowed to leave I would have time for a ride…

I’m going to assume not for customs reasons, but I really have no idea.
Are you going to carry on your uni? what size?

A lot of people want to know: how do you know when you can leave the airport on a layover? For most layovers, you can leave the transit area in between flights, as long as you go through customs and immigration on the way out, and of course you’ll have to pass through security again on your way back into the airport. However, some tickets may not permit you to leave the airport. Always check beforehand with your airline to see if your ticket allows you to leave the transit area.

You will also check ahead of time to see if you’d need a visa to enter the destination that you’re arriving at. Check out our widget (right hand side of the blog) for a quick check to see if you’d need to apply for a visa.

Take into account that at many countries, you will have to go through Customs and Immigration upon your first point of entry, regardless of whether you’re connecting.

Another thing to be aware of is your luggage. If you have a layover, always check beforehand with your airline to see if you can check your luggage through to your final destination.

Wow Billy, you talk just like a {non-referenced} web site.

With a schedule like that, you can probably leave. Otherwise SFO is supposed to keep you comfortable and out of trouble for 11 hours (not counting unforseen delays)? Of course you will have to do the Customs and Immigration thing. I’m pretty sure the USA will let you in again. Upon arrival back at the airport, I recommend sticking with the usual 2-hours early for international flights. Also you can check your flight’s status via internet before you go back. I’m pretty sure you can take BART or some form of mass transit directly out of the airport also.

are you related to Greg Harper?

International Unicycling Groups have been lobbying for unicycle space at every airport.

The B*ke Lobby is much more powerful and blocks us at every turn:D

Hope there’s a place for a shower after the ride. It’s a long flight to be trapped next to a stinky person.

Ended up sticking around the airport all day, wandered around, caught a few Zs, ate two really overpriced meals then had a lovely overnight flight to Australia.

I did not see any showers in SF but there was some at Sidney and Melbourne.

They also take airport security way too seriously in the states, didn’t really want to go through that more than I had to.

Yes, in that we both have brains and both write our own stuff.

I know what you mean. That’s what you get when people fly loaded jets into your tall buildings. If someone flew a couple of jets in to the CN Tower for instance… well, bad example. It would leave a couple of black marks and that would be about it. :stuck_out_tongue:

The only time I’ve exited an airport during a layover was in St. Louis many years ago (before 9/11). They had a train you could take all the way from the airport to the big arch. I rushed there and back, which was worth it, to find out my flight had been delayed by a couple of hours.

They get suspicious of people with gasoline on their breath.
