On Saturday 29th June at the UK unimeet a number of riders tried and rated 5 different saddles on the same unicycle (not at the same time).
This was an informal affair with a few of us trying all the saddles and a larger number crowding around to try the new Velo ‘Kris Holm’ one.
Everyone was asked to give a mark out of 10 for each of four categories. Here are the averaged scores (rounded where necessary).
Dodger saddle:
Comfort 5.75
Strength 2.75
Appearance 3
General 4.75
Viscount saddle:
Comfort 6.7
Strength 8.3
Appearance 9
General 8
Onza saddle (Viscount style):
Comfort 5
Strength 7.67
Appearance 5
General 5.3
Miyata saddle:
Comfort 8
Strength 6.5
Appearance 7
General 8.25
Velo ‘Kris Holm’ saddle:
Comfort 8.6
Strength 6.6
Appearance 9.4
General 8.4
Here are some points that came out while we were trying them.
Dodger saddle: It was a bit small with too much flex but was better than some cheap ones.
Viscount saddle: Bumpers come off and not nice to fingers.
Onza saddle (Viscount style): It seemed smaller than the Viscount but wasn’t and this was put down to deeper foam in the middle but not at the ends which seemed to flatten it making the curve not deep enough. The handle was nice but not deep enough.
Miyata saddle: The main complaint here was the handle, too small but it is deep.
Velo ‘Kris Holm’ saddle: The fabric used was said to be sticky which some liked and some didn’t. The handle was larger than the Miyata.
Here are some personal notes. First I couldn’t give the saddles as good a try as I’d have liked ‘cause I had sprained my ankle earlier in the day
My favourite was clear, the Velo ‘Kris Holm’ saddle without hesitation. There was a little too much flex but I understand that the production ones will be stiffer. I liked the fabric, which meant the saddle stuck to my butt better than a viscount. We didn’t try the Velo without the handle, which doesn’t have Kris Holm’s signature on the back; this will be aimed at freestyle I believe but is largely the same. Not being into trials it’s hard for me to comment on whether the Onza saddle will suit trials riders. I can say that it’s strong, should be easy for seat out and is nice to grab (grippy rather than smooth plastic).
So there you are I’ve butt tested the new Velo saddle and I like it. I must thank Kris Holm for working with them to produce a decent saddle for unicyclist, BTW Kris are they paying you for each time they use your signature on the back?
Cheers, Gary
Oh one more thing, my son wants everyone to know that he was the first in the UK to try the new Velo, there done that.
