Rollout of a Coker wheel - the answers

Do you have a Coker and a cycle computer? Wonder what you should set
the rollout value at? My model gives you the ‘best’ value, based on
rider weight, tyre pressure and tread wear. See
<http://www.xs4all.nl/~klaasbil/coker_rollout.htm>.

Even if you don’t want to mess with your computer because you’re used
to the results the way they are  it may be fun to play with the
model and see what the effects are.

Enjoy! Another unicycling statistics exercise brought to you by

Klaas, this is awesome. My compliments and thanks.

It is interesting to note that my rollout number is the lowest in the spectrum. Based on where some of the clusters are, I may re-measure and update my computer.

OR…

I guess I could just use your model. Yeah, that’s it… Why should I do any more work? All I need to find is a pressure guage and I’m off and running.

Thanks for putting this together…it’s a great service.

Tom

Excellent work Klaas, mind if we link to this from www.unicycle.2ya.com?

Very timely post. I was talking to Billham last night about the innacuracy of my cyclometer on my Coker. I rode a known 5 mile loop on Sunday and my cyclometer was consistantly showing 8.8 miles. I am fairly certain I had based my input number on Nathan’s. I don’t have a high level of confidence that I could get a meaningful number from my own rollout. I tried it on a 24 inch and that was difficult enough.

I plan on checking my input value again tonight, and adjusting it as needed.

I would really like to see some of these people on the chart fill in as much of the missing info as possible. It would make the chart a lot more useful.

Klaas Bil thanks as always for your info gathering skills.

This is awesome Klaas. Thanks for putting this together. It’s interesting how much difference rider weight, tread wear and pressure make on the rollouts. I had never looked into this before.

I have been using my measurement of 2776mm for over 5 years now (regarless of wear/pressure/weight) and it pretty much matches with your loaded straight rollout (at 80kg/50% wear/3 bar). Maybe I should adjust to a slightly higher number, but the difference is very slight. On long rides, my cyclometer matches road signs and my mapping software close enough.

Bugman…you must have confused the units or have a problem with your cyclometer. If you use 2776mm you should be MUCH closer than 75% off - more like 0.75%. Have a friend help you do your own rollout measurement as it’s much easier that way. Do 10 measurements, throw out the high & low then average the rest and send the result to Klaas.

I plan on recheck the number I entered, but I suspect the cyclometer is the issue.

I will try to get somebody to work with me on the rollout, because on your own it is really tough to get an accurate rollout. My biggest challenge will be riding a straight line. Maybe that was the difference in my odometer reading? All the wobbling added 75% to my milage.

If much more data become available i can rebuild the model. But it
won’t be anytime soon. I’ve been sitting on this data for too long (I
was almost done around X-mas 2003, then discovered an error in the
model, then other things took priority. So much else to do (such as
riding…).

Yes of course, I mean no of course (of course), please link. The more
the fruit of my work is used, the better.

In general, anyone may link to any page on my website. For free! It’s
nice though if you let me know. However, deeplinks (e.g. directly to a
picture) are not generally OK.
