Who here roller skates? Be it Speed, Jam, Artistic, whatever - post pics of yo skating “wips” or whatever those hip young whipper snappers are saying nowadays this century. Holy fishhooks I just broke me hip.
My skates are Riedell Carreras with Leather Carrera Boots, Sure-Grip Probe Lightweight Nylon plates, ABEC 3 bearings, 62mm Carrera speed/jam wheels, and hot red laces. The only downside to the red laces is that everyone at the rink thinks they’re rentals because the rental speed skates have red/orange laces. They’re aboot $120 online/$150 rink.
As for my funky moves, I go backwards, sideways heel to heel, spin, and do tons of other usual Jam moves. I don neeed no steenkin names, I just bustem out.
I Roller-skate also. I have an old pair of Reidel Gold Star boots with a Chicago Panther Plate. The plates were made of a material called Dupont Zytel. It looks similar to yours, but with an adjustable length pivot bolt (triple action). The wheels are Chicago ? Not sure, as they are really worn. Those are my indoor skates. For outdoors, I have a Reidel 220 boot, Chicago Panther plate (I really like the Panther plate, lightweight and lots of action) with Gyro wheels. I’ve had both pair of skates for over 25 years.
I’ll post a couple of photos of the two pairs of skates when I get my main computer running again in a couple of days.
The Gold Star is an ice skating boot. Possibly it works for both, though.
The Panther turned up no good results on Google. Is it discontinued?
The 220 is a nice boot, although I don’t really like high-tops.
I have a pair of ice skates with top-of-the-line Riedell boots and Phantom blades. I have not priced this setup lately but I think they would cost over $400 if I had to replace them now. I bought them about 25 years ago when I ice skated a lot.
I might buy some new laces today while I’m at the rink. I think I’ll go for neon green.
I was thinking about going “big” and getting a Riedell USA 125 skate, but I decided on the Carrera for a few reasons: 1) They have the same plate 2) They have the same bearings 3) The only reason the USA is priced higher is that it has a boot with “hand picked leather” (so what) and it has better wheels (easily replaceble). I love my Carreras and they are sky high in durability and performance ratings, but hey, what do you expect from Riedell!?! One thing I made sure of when I got these Carreras is that they are many steps above those sp**d sk*tes that cost under $100. That’s the thing with skates - $100 is a complete quality drop off point - anything above is good and anything below is getting into the “learner” category. The only exception is the $90 Boxers which are OK.
When I was your age (I always like saying that ), rental skates at the rink had wooden wheels. Sidewalk skates for home use had metal wheels. The wooden wheels on a wooden floor were pretty good. The metal wheels on a sidewalk were really BAD. The “new” synthetic wheels that are used today are so much better than wheels of yore.
The Gold Star can be used for both ice and roller skating. It is a very stiff boot. When I would lace them up, I wouldn’t use the speed lace hooks and instead would leave the upper part of the boot untied. This would give me lots of support but still allow me to flex the ankles and knees to "Boogie: to the music.
I don’t think that the Panther plate is made any more. It’s a shame because it was so responsive. I originally had (and still own) Snyder Super Deluxe skate plates. Very nice plates but heavy. They’re for sale if anyone is interested.
The 220 is nice, not as much support as the Gold Star. I also lace them the same way that I lace up the Gold Stars. Leaving the uppers with out laces.
I personally didn’t like the low top shoes. I just didn’t have enough support.
The only place I have to skate is at a crowded rink, and it would be really hard to film me unless my dad skated along side with the camera or something. Possibly sometime, though.
I don’t have a digital camera (maybe some day). Yes, these are figure skates. I checked at home to see the model of boot I have. They are Riedell Royal boots with a Phantom blade. It doesn’t look like the Royal model is made anymore. I got the boots and the blades new about 25 years ago for $135 from a skating rink that needed the money so was willing to sell them “cheap”. I did not realize what a good deal I got at the time. I just know that was a LOT of money to me 25 years ago.
