I went to an indoor rock climbing wall last night with some guys and i had a blast and it is a great way to build your muscles…i really enjoyed it. I would like to attend it once every week, that would be great, (the only thing is it tires the crap out of you the next morning [ i woke up at 2:00 today ] lol) do any of you rock climb on a regular basis?
Yes, I think Kris Holm does. I would too, but I’ve got no idea where.
I climb the airconditiong system and some balconies sometimes, though. Does that count?
I climb every now and then. Its really fun, and a great workout.
The last few times I have went sucked though, because I was already sore and tired from working and unicycling, and that made climbing really exhausting.
Corbin and I climb indoors 2-3 times a week. Weather permitting, we go outdoors as well… we’re quite spoiled here, having hundreds of climbing areas within a few hours of driving.
I’ve been climbing for over five years now… but I still feel relatively new to the sport. Like unicycling, it takes a lot (perhaps years) of focused practice to attain the skills necessary to tackle most climbs. I’m just starting to get comfortable with moderately difficult climbing, and am still working on climbing efficiently so I can tackle longer climbs in shorter amounts of time.
Despite all the work, it is a very rewarding sport. You get to go places that many people could never even imagine… you make all sorts of interesting friends along the way… you’ll even learn a bit about yourself in the process. Dangling from your fingertips on the face of a cliff, 500 feet off the ground, and with but one other person and a few bits of gear to keep you alive, you’ll get to experience the entire spectrum of human emotion.
Here’s a picture Corbin took while I was toproping Lazy Bum in Yosemite:
I climb outdoors once a week with a friend who has all the gear. It’s such a great sport and everyone who does it seems really friendly. We have some great cliffs about 30mins drive from my house - right near the city.
I bought some shoes last week - Red Chili Spirit IZ’s…they’re great!

I’m not a sensational climber, but I do enjoy the challange. Mostly though I climb the fake ones that are put up in amusement parks and carnivals.
rock climing is almost as ‘intents’ as camping…
i was watching top gear the other day and two rock climbers raced a guy in a car of a mountain. They beat him by about 5 min or something. the thing was, they used no equiptment. Except for the guy behind hammering a spike every now and again…
I love climbing but havent been for years. There isnt anywhere convenient near me. I was toying with the idea of putting some climbing holds on the inside of my garage wall but wasnt sure whether the breeze blocks would be up to it.
i go once a week
I love rock climbing as much as MUni riding, and of all the people I know it seems the rock climber community get the connection. They understand why I would make a trail harder on myself by giving up a wheel and some gears of a MTB so I could enjoy the challenge of the journey even more. The greater the obstacle the greater the reward in succeeding. But I will say the climbing community has more become more divided into sub-cultures (boulders, sport, trad, and lately gym), and I hope that does not happen to this community. While I have a favorite style I understand the others (trials, street, etc, and I have a Coker) and by no means think one is superior to another. Here is a pic of me doing some sport climbing in Arkansas, but I enjoy multi-pitch trad the most.
I want to but I don’t have any time at the mo
I climb alot indoors in the summer, but unfortunately there’s no place to climb nearby while I am away at school…This summer I am hoping to go a ton, both in the gym and outside. I’m not that great, but it’s lots of fun and I climb with better people most of the time, so it’s cool to learn new stuff.
mostly i just do bouldering(due to a lack of money for proper climbing gear) but when i am able to go with my freinds who have extra gear then i climb…usually like 2-3 times a month…during the summer i go more like 2-3 times a week…
I used to climb outdoors, both top-rope, and lead climbs, mostly in the Shawangunks (aka Gunks), and out west in Little Cottonwood Canyon in Utah. A bunch of other places, occaissionally.
Now this is where I do all my climbing. It’s small but convenient (next to our dining room).
Here’s a kind of mosaic pic (there’s no place in the room I can get far enough away to get the whole thing in one picture). It’s five or six 4’ X 8’ X 3/4" sheets of plywood, cut up and built in at various angles. One on the left wall, two in the middle, two on the right, and one on the ceiling. The holds can be re-arranged easily so it never gets boring.
I climb as much as I possibly can. I climb in the gym up to 4 times per week for an hour or two (I’m careful to give myself proper rests). Lately I’ve been inside as climbing around Orono, Maine isn’t that great when it’s -10F outside.
Recently I purchased some trad gear and have really enjoyed doing that. It’s an expensive initial investment, but it’s well worth it. I climb in Acadia National Park a bit (places like The Precipice, Otter Cliffs, etc.). All of that is trad or toprope, depending on where you are.
Over March break I’m going to explore a local cliff that has huge potential. A couple friends and I are going to rap down and clean a couple routes up and hopefully put up some first ascents. And, of course, lots and lots of climbing this summer.
If anyone is completely new and looking to get into climbing, I highly recommend books from John Long’s How to Climb series. I just finished Climbing Anchors (second edition). They’re great books and very humorous (especially Close Calls- even good for those who don’t climb).
I also have some climbing photos on my website, http://www.nohillnothrill.com/photos/main.php/v/climbing/.
Climb on!
I also recommend those books. You know, of course, he’s one of us, right? Vivalargo.
Yes I do, but I wasn’t going to say it.
The story in Close Calls about the climbers who get trapped behind Angel Falls for several days has got to be the most insane story I’ve ever read.
Funny you should mention this. My friend and I decided to start doing it more often starting next monday, I used to go a few times a year but never that often, now that I don’t get out much I’m probably going to try and do it every week on my day off.
right now im talking my mom into splitting the price of a year long membership for our local rock wall gym…so i can go there about once a week, that would be great…id really like to get in the habit of going there once a week
