Rochelle Township High School receives threatening letter

I called home a bit ago to talk with Mary and Ben said she wasn’t home quite yet. Word is that the high school and one elementary school received a threatening letter today but the type of threat was not released. The schools quickly typed up a notice to send home with every student explaining the situation and that parents will have discretion on whether or not to send their children to school in the morning. The letter explained that letter threats are typically designed to scare and not announce any action. So school administrators are quite certain the school building is safe at this time.

Interestingly, many RTHS students participated in disaster drills yesterday. I wonder if the two are connected?

We should learn more as time goes on.

Yikes!!

It’s not that scary were I come from.
But if this is your first time then it definitly is scary.
We already had four or five bomb threats by this time last year.

So, our your kids going to school tommorrow?

Unfortunately, it’s easy to become desensitized to things like this after many ‘crying wolfs’, isn’t it? There’s an old electrician’s mantra that says, “When you start to lose your repect of electricity, it’s time to get out of the business.”

Since absences will not be counted tomorrow, Ben might use this as an opportunity. Ben spends the first three periods of the day traveling by school bus to and attending a computer class at a local community college. He knows he doesn’t have anything going on in his afternoon classes at the high school so he may drive himself to his college class then spend some extra time there tomorrow putzing around on his own computer that he’ll bring from home. It’s a great class and he’s learning a lot.

We are not concerned at this point about him attending classes at the high school. Brad attends the Middle School, which was not affected by the threat.

We had about 2 or 3 bomb threats last year. Police came in and searched the building every time. I think they even brough sniffer dogs or something. They never found anything. But then again, nothing blew up yet.

Not much more news today. There is a heavy police presence around this morning and the kids will have to enter the building through metal detectors. The bomb dogs have searched, no news on whether or not they found anything. We even made the Rockford news.

Mary is going to work early to see if she can get in the building before the students so she won’t have to stand in lines outside in the cold.
