Robust 8ft unicycles.

Peter Nyflot and myself have been attempting to free mount 8ft unicycles but
have run into a small problem. They have a tendancy to break. Any one got any
suggestions on a source of robust 8ft unicycles that will stand up to some
serious punishment? We are both fairly big guys and our riding style can only be
described as hard core.

I know Tom Miller used to make some, are any of those lying around just waiting
to be sold?

Here’s hoping, Peter

Re: Robust 8ft unicycles.

In Vancouver BC there is a place, Toby’s Cycleworks, that makes high-end giraffe
unicycles. He is a very good machinist and has made a number of
unusual/overbuilt designs for street performers, circuses, etc. He also built my
custom MUni and did an excellent job.

You can reach Toby at 1-604-255-9698.

I have a nine footer that has a special wheel-stopping step for freemounting.
But it’s not all mine (half Ken Fuchs’) and I’m not ready to let it go.

Why not order some new ones from Tom? You will break before they do, and
waiting for him to make them is more of a sure thing than waiting for used ones
to show up.

Another source of robust tall unicycles was the late Bernard Crandall, in the
70’s. He was the founder of the Pontiac Unicycle Club, who hosted the first USA
National Unicycle Meet in 1973 and a USA founding member. He used to build real
strong giraffes for $10 a foot! Those were the days. All the unicycles he made
are probably still around somewhere. If their owners want to part with them I’m
sure they’re worthy of many more years of use.

Is Tom still in business then? I hear rumours that he was packing up shop.

I’ve heard some rumors too. But Tom has thought about it for many years, so he’s
not down until he’s down. If he stops making the custom unicycles, where will
(we Americans, at least) get them?

Give him a call at (765) 452-2692

DM giraffes are generally accepted to be pretty bomb proof.
