A while ago I decided to build a second wheel for my 26” MUni. Using a new hub some 127mm cranks I took of my old trials and the wheel from an old road bike that I found in a dumpster. I could not use the new wheel until today because it got freakishly warm today and the snow melted on the more major streets in the city. I went for a spin with the new wheel on the newly snowless streets and experienced the joy and fear of going faster than I can run. The downhills were a bit scary because I would get some real good speed going and not be able to slow myself down very easily due to the shortish (for me) cranks and leg speed. On hard packed snow the skinny slick did better than I thought it would, due partially to the fact that with shorter cranks I can’t put as much torque to the wheel as with my MUni or trials setup. I did get thrown off a bunch of times when the tire sank into softer snow where the sun had been shining all day. I found the experience to be very positive and I can see myself do some longer distance uni rides in the future. Everything is going to be supper icy tomorrow so the 26X3” Gazz with the chains is going back on but come May when there are some clear roads again I am going to give that road wheel some exercise, hopefully with some shorter cranks and a break.
Your “Enter” key is sitting there, crying softly by itself, sad from lack of attention and use.
Use it often, learn to love it. It’ll make your posts much more readable.
Thanks.
Kewl, do you have any pictures of this new wheel? And do you really have a “snow wheel” with chains on it?
Unfortunately I do not have a camera so no pics.
And yes I do have a “snow wheel” it is the wheel the uni came with and I built some chains for it as I did not want to put screws through such an expensive tire.
i described how i made the chains near the end of this thread
